Sight Word Ball

Purpose: This activity will teach students sight words.

Materials: A inflatable beach ball that has sight words written on it

Procedures:

1. Kids sit on their desks

2. Teacher will start the game and throw the ball to a child

3. Wherever their finger lands they have to read that specific word

aloud

4. Then the child has to use the word in a sentence

Brown Bag

Purpose: This activity will teach students sentence structure and it will

help enhance their vocabulary.

Materials: A brown paper bag and pieces of paper cut up with words on

them.

Procedures:

1. Teacher will place a brown paper lunch bag on each group of

tables

2. Kids will take their own words out of the bag

3. They will have to create their own sentence with the words

chosen from the bag

Dismissal Vocabulary

Purpose: This activity will help teach students new vocabulary.

Materials: No materials needed.

Procedures:

1. Upon dismissal, children will line up by the door, behind the


teacher.
2. The teacher will ask each child one word they learned today in
class
3. Each child will have to tell the teacher one word they learned
today to be able to leave the classroom.
4. If they are unable to think of a word their first try they have to
return to the end of the line.

Quick Writing

Purpose: This activity will teach students vocabulary. They will learn to

spell and use these words in a sentence. It will help improve their

sentence structure.

Materials: A pad of paper and a pencil.

Procedures:

1. Every morning when a student gets to class there will be a


question on the board such as “ What did you do this weekend?”
2. The students will then use their notepad to write and answer that
question
3. Their response does not have to be long. It just has to touch on the
aspect of the question.

Popcorn Writing

Purpose: This activity will teach students vocabulary. They will learn to

spell and use these words in a sentence. It will help improve their

sentence structure.

Materials: A popcorn container and two sets of colored paper (


1 colored and 1 white) Then will need to be ripped into pieces. Also
children will need paper and a pencil.
Procedures:

1. Students will pick 1 colored piece of paper, which states a


character on it.
2. Then pick 1 white piece which is a setting
3. Then the children will write their own story basing it off that
specific character and setting.

Alphabet Soup

Purpose: This activity will help teach the students vocabulary and

improve their sentence structure.

Materials: A pot of water filled with plastic letters.

Procedures:

1. Students will pick out a group of letters

2. Then try to create a word out of them

3. They will then have to recite that word

Word Bingo

Purpose: This activity will teach the students new vocabulary and help
them to be able to recognize/ connect a word with the picture given to
them
Materials: A bingo sheet (different set ups/ words for each child) and a
coin. The teacher will need pictures as well.
Procedures:

1. Teacher will hold up a picture


2. Then the students will have to find that pictures word on their
bingo sheet
3. If they find it they will put a coin on that word
4. Once a child has five coins in a row (diagonal/horizontal) they will
scream bingo
5. They will then have to recite the words they put a coin on
6. The teacher will make sure she said those words
7. If the words match with the pictures the teacher showed the class
that student would get a prize for winning a round of word bingo.

Roll & Write

Purpose: This activity will teach students vocabulary. This will also
help them improve their writing skills as well as help them learn their
numbers.
Materials: A sheet with a list die numbers on it ( 1-6). It will have a
place to write words underneath it. Also will need dice.
Procedures:

1. Students will have a list of numbers of a dice at the top of their


paper
2. Each number on a dice will be assigned to an ending of a word (ex:
number ones ending is –it)
3. Students will then have to write a word using that ending

Build the Words

Purpose: This activity will help them with their spelling, word structure

and their vocabulary.

Materials: Bananagrams pieces and a sheet of paper with words

written on the left side. The right side needs to have blanks so the

children can spell that word.

Procedures:
1. Students will have a list of words
2. They will use the bananagrams pieces to spell out the word
written on their piece of paper

Sight Word Bowling

Purpose: This can teach the students either sight words or new

vocabulary.

Materials: Plastic bowling pins, a plastic bowling ball and pieces of


paper with sight words or new vocabulary on them (need to be taped on
pins)
Procedures:

1. Students will be able to each have a chance to bowl and knock


some pins
2. The number of pins they knock down, they will have to recite
aloud
3. Teacher can keep score, or just play for fun

Around the World

Purpose: This activity will teach students them vocabulary through

flashcards.

Materials: You will need a classroom of children and flashcards with


vocab words on them.
Procedures:
1. Have all the students stand up
2. The first student stands next to the student behind them.
3. As the teacher you will show a flashcard
4. Whoever is the fastest to say the correct answer moves on.
5. Whoever gets the most flashcards correct wins a prize

Reading Theatre

Purpose: This activity will teach students to become comfortable


presenting in front of their classmates. Also it is a way for the children
to comprehend the story better through an activity and being creative. It
will boost their knowledge and vocabulary.

Materials: You will need a book or short story and scripts of that story

for each child. Also depending on the teacher’s preference you may use

props or costumes.

Procedures:

1.Have a group of children read/ act out a reading in front of the class.
2. Each child will receive a script, which is divided amongst the readers
3. Each child will read the character they are assigned
4. They will then read aloud and act out this story for their audience

Scavenger Hunt

Purpose: This activity will help evaluate the children on their reading
comprehension skills. They will also learn vocabulary through an
activity

Materials: A sheet of paper with clues on it. May have to retrieve


certain items if the clues require you to. You will also need a pen or
pencil to write down your answers.
Procedures:

1.Have the students have a scavenger hunt inside or outside


2. They will use their sheet with clues on it to help them find the
answers
3. If inside one of the clues could be like: “If head towards the library
you will find a book on display, what is the name of that book?”
4. Once have found all the items or answered all the questions on the
sheet you will return back to your classroom
5. Whoever is the first back they will be the winners of the activity

K-W-L Chart

Purpose: This activity will gage what the student knows (K), wants to
know (W), and has learned (L) about a specific topic. This will make the
students use their prior knowledge to complete the first two parts out.
The students will also learn new information and vocabulary for the
third part of this activity.

Materials: A sheet of paper that includes a column for each letter (K, W,

L). The students will also need a pen or pencil to complete the chart.

Procedures:

1. As the teacher you will give them a topic (ex: Animals)


2. Then the students will be given a sheet with a column for each letter
(K, W, L)
3. Then they will proceed to fill out what they know already and what
they want to learn
4. After the topic is further taught the students will then fill out what
they learned in the last column (L)

Mad Libs

Purpose: This activity will help the students understand nouns,

adjectives, verbs etc. It will also help them on their sentence structure

as well as their writing.

Materials: You will need a Mad Libs worksheet, a pen or pencil.

Procedures:

1. As the teacher you will hand out mad lib worksheets to your students
(can all be the same or different)
2. The students will then have to fill out the blanks that are provided to
them on their sheet
3. Once they will out all the blanks they can read their story that was
provided to them and see if it makes sense

Syllable Claps

Purpose: This activity will help students learn about syllables. It will

help them break up words by clapping out their syllables. ,

Materials: No supplies needed.

Procedures:
1. You will gather your class into a group
2. You will say a word and as a group the students will have to clap
out the syllables in that specific word (Ex: Airplane has two
syllables so the students would clap twice)
3. Then repeat with a different word

Rhyming Chart

Purpose: This activity will help students practice their rhyming skills
and writing skills. This will also help enhance their vocabulary.

Materials: A chart that is labeled “What Rhymes With.” Then


underneath the title of the chart you will have a blank laminated card.
Under that blank card you will have other blank laminated cards
(different color). You will also need a dry erase marker. (where the
teacher will write a word with a dry erase marker. Then

Procedures:
1. Teacher will gather the students around the chart
2. The teacher will then write a word on the lone blank card
underneath the title
3. Then the students will have to come up with different words that
rhyme with that specific word
4. Each student will have to come up to the chart and write one
word that rhymes with a dry erase marker.

Hangman

Purpose: This activity will help students practice their vocab and
writing.

Materials: You will need either a partner or a group of students to play


this learning game. You will also need a piece of paper and a pencil or
pen.

Procedures:
1. Someone will go up to the board and think of a word
2. That student will then draw a line out for each letter of that word
3. Students will guess letters to see if they are in the word chosen
4. If they are then that student will put the guessed letter in the
appropriate spot
5. If not then that student will create a body part and write the letter
to the side for reference
6. If the man has all its appropriate body parts and the word is not
solved then the student will have to tell the class their chosen
word

SLAP!

Purpose: This activity will teach the students new vocabulary and help
them to be able to recognize/ connect a word with the picture given to
them

Materials: You will need a fly swatter and flashcards with vocabulary
on them.

Procedures:

1. The student will spread out 4 to 10 flashcards on a desk

2. The teacher will call out a word

3. The student will then have to slap their fly swatter on the flashcard
that matches the word the teacher said

4. The teacher will continue with more words
