Skill 16: Fundus Examination with direct Ophthalmoscope

Tasks: Perform direct ophthalmoscopy with correct technique on a manikin /


person

Satisfactory completion of task : when all relevant aspects of the task,


governed by the following criteria are demonstrated :
● adequate preparation of the patient and tools for the procedure
● conduct of the procedure adheres to principles of standard precautions
● consideration of documentation of the procedure
● adequate documentation of the procedure
● recognition of limitations

Preparation
1 • Wash hands

• Assemble the equipment by connecting the head to the battery handle

• Select ‘0’ on the lens dial

● Presses the green button on the handle


and rotate to get the light and chooses the
round yellow light

• Switches off the light to make the room semi dark

2 Examination of Right Eye


● Holds the Ophthalmoscope in Right hand and stands on the Right side of
the mannequin

• Align the Right Eye with the peephole of the Ophthalmoscope directing
the light on the Right pupil of the Mannequin.

• Notices the red reflex of the fundus and moves slowly towards the
mannequin eye to be very close to the Mannequin eye.

3 Examination of Left Eye*
• Holds the Ophthalmoscope in the left hand and stands on the Left side of
the Mannequin

• Repeats the step 2 to examine the red reflex and fundus of the Left Eye

4 Complete the examination and place back the equipment

5 Wash hands

6 Inform findings to patient

7 Document
