Elevated serum uric acid levels is also known as hyperuricemia. Several studies have found
that hyperuricemia is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. A total of 149 patients
participated in this study, 59 (39.6%) reported to have arthritis while 90 (60.4%) did not.
Samples were tested for the following parameters: fasting blood glucose, glycosylated
hemoglobin (HbA1c), lipid pro le, and uric acid. The patients’ duration of arthritis and
biometrics were also noted. The data showed that adjusted mean systolic blood pressure of
arthritis patients is signi cantly higher (P = .001) than patients without arthritis. Those
reported to have a history of diabetes are 105.8 times (95% CI: 12.3 to 907.0) more likely to
have arthritis. The duration of arthritis is signi cantly correlated with serum uric acid,
indicating that serum uric acid increases by 5.6 μmol/L (95% CI: 0.8 to 10.5) every year.
