Standardization is at the heart of ISO 9001:2015 and our Engineering Standards Handbook is a key

resource that VanAire utilizes to ensure not only consistency in our designs but also that they will meet our
customer’s requirements.

This document and our engineering practices are based around the ISO 12490:2011(E)

Here is a brief summary of some of the items that VanAire has standardized on and takes into
consideration when engineering and manufacturing Engineered Valve Automation Hardware

Typical Engineered Valve Automation Hardware Material

 Carbon Steel Brackets are typically made with A-36 material
 Carbon Steel Couplings are typically made from 1045CDS or 4140QTSR and are Electroless Nickel
Coated for better corrosion protection
 Stainless Steel Brackets are typically made from type 304 or 316 material
 Stainless Steel Couplings are typically made from 17-4 H1150 material

General Engineering Details

 The basis for our engineering standards are derived from ISO12490:2011E-7.6.1, 7.6.2, 7.6.3, 11.2 and
12.1.3
 7.6.1
o Use actuator’s maximum published rated torque
o Use manufacturer’s value for weight and center of gravity
o Add any other anticipated support or external load
o Tensile stresses in mounting kit components shall not exceed 67% of SMYS when delivering 1.1 or more
times the maximum torque/thrust output.
 7.6.2
o Bolting in mounting kits shall not be subjected to shear forces, unless otherwise agreed.
o The mounting kit design and manufacturing tolerance shall ensure the following:
 parallelism of the intermediate support mounting faces;
 concentricity of the PCD of the bolting of the intermediate support;
 alignment of the PCD, valve stem, coupling and the actuator drive.
 7.6.1 and 11.2
o Fillet Welds are designed with Strength Efficiency Factor (SEF) of 0.75 or better.
o Welds are designed to comply with AWS D1.1
o Welders shall be qualified in accordance with AWS D1.1
 12.1.3
o Visual Inspection of welds shall be in accordance with AWS D1.1
 7.6.3
o External loads such as wind, snow, seismic are not considered (contact VanAire if there is a concern)
o Normal temperature range is -20 to 200 degrees F (contact VanAire if there is a concern)
o Frequency of cycling and cycle speed are not considered (contact VanAire if there is a concern)
o Mounting Orientation:
 Whenever practical, the actuator should be able to mount in all quadrants, where it is not practical, the
standard will be parallel to pipe
