Before You Start 1
CHAPTER
This chapter contains important information you have to read before using SMS (Service
Management Service) and SDL (Simple Device Login) and SSO (Single Sign-On) Login
Services.
1-1
Overview of SMS
SMS (Service Management Service) is software that enables you to access
1 machines via a network from a web browser, and install and manage MEAP
applications. The software (web server software) required to use SMS is included in
Before You Start
this software. To be able to use the SMS, all you need is a web browser and a
network connection between your computer and the machine.
You can use SMS if the imageRUNNER is connected to the same network that your
computer is using.
When you start SMS, enter your password in the [Log In] page, and log in, the following
top page is displayed.
[Log Out] Click to finish SMS operations and log off. When you click this,
the [Log In] page is displayed.
■ You can set to allow a user to log in to SMS with the user name and
password used when logging on to the machine.
You can also set to allow a user to log in to SMS with the user name and password of a
user registered as an administrator.
NOTE
Default Authentication (Department ID Management) is set to a usable state as the
default.
• Displays a login screen on the touch panel display of the machine, and performs user
authentication.
• Displays a login page when the machine is accessed from a web browser, and performs
user authentication.
• Enables you to limit and keep track of the print/scan totals for Department ID, by linking
to the Department ID Management function of the machine.
1
Before You Start
IMPORTANT
To limit and keep track of the print/scan totals for Department ID by linking to the
Department ID Management function of the machine, set Department ID Management to
'On' in System Settings (from the Additional Functions screen). To set the SDL login
service, the registered information in the SDL login service and the registered user data
(Department ID and Password) in Department ID Management of the machine have to
match.
- 'Domain Authentication'
- 'Local Device Authentication'
- 'Domain Authentication + Local Device Authentication'
NOTE
• The three user authentication systems can be switched using a Web browser.
• The default setting is 'Domain Authentication + Local Device Authentication'. To ensure
the security of your system, change the SSO user authentication system to 'Domain
Authentication', or change the user name and password for the Local Device
Authentication administrator to something other than the default setting, as soon as you
start using SSO.
You can also use the optional NetSpot Accountant to analyze/manage the current state of 1
the machine.

Domain Controllers Domain Controllers
NetSpot Accountant Security Agent (Active Directory) (Active Directory)
Trusted
• To use Local Device Authentication and Department ID Management at the same time,
the information registered for Local Device Authentication and the user information for
Department ID Management (Department ID and passwords) must match.
• If you want to manage print totals and scan totals for each Department ID when using
Local Device Authentication and Department ID Management at the same time, set
Department ID Management to 'On'.
• The user information for the SDL login service and user information for Local Device
Authentication are managed separately inside the machine. Changes made to the user
information in one do not affect the other.
• You cannot use the optional control card reader with Local Device Authentication. If you
want to use the optional control card reader, use the SDL login service.
• Security Agent is only necessary to use Domain Authentication.
• Security Agent must be installed in a computer belonging to the domain which includes
the machine.
IMPORTANT
Your browser requires the following settings:
- JavaScript should be enabled.
- Cookies should be enabled for each session.
NOTE
No web server or software other than that described above is required (a web server is
included in the supported imageRUNNER machine).
IMPORTANT
If you are using Windows XP with Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, Java™2 Runtime
Environment Standard Edition 1.3.1 or later is required.
• If there is a difference between the language set on the machine and the one set on the
Active Directory, the sender's Full name is not displayed on the e-mail recipient's
machine.
• To manage an imageRUNNER with Domain Authentication, turn ON the power of the
computer that has Security Agent installed, and confirm that Security Agent is operating.
• Do not install Security Agent on the computer that is equipped with more than two
network boards.
• If there is more than a 30 minute difference between the time set on the computer with
Active Directory, the time set on the machine, and the time set on the computer used for
logging in, an error occurs when you log in using Domain Authentication. To be able to
log in using Domain Authentication, it is necessary to match the current time on both
computers and the machine.
• When using Domain Authentication, make sure you register an administrator. If you do
not register an administrator, some settings and management functions will not be
available, depending on the application. The method of registering differs depending on
your system environment.
- When using NetSpot Accountant, the users registered as administrators in NetSpot
Accountant will also be recognized as administrators in Domain Authentication. For
instructions on registering an administrator, see the manual for NetSpot Accountant.
- When not using NetSpot Accountant, the users belonging to the group "Canon
Peripheral Admins" in Active Directory will be recognized as administrators in Domain
Authentication. Follow the instructions in the manual for Active Directory to create a
group called "Canon Peripheral Admins," and register the administrators.
• Do not set "Canon Peripheral Admins" as a primary group.
IMPORTANT
• It is necessary to set the computer with Security Agent to use a DNS server for
accessing network.
• If you install Security Agent in a computer in which a DNS server is already installed, the
1
Security Agent automatic detection service may not function. In this case, start Security
IMPORTANT
• User names and passwords are registered in a database inside the machine.
• You can only use alphanumeric characters for the user names and passwords.
• In order to prevent unauthorized use, make sure to change the user name and password
of the Local Domain Authentication administrator as soon as you start using SSO.
■ Network Settings
Specify [Network Settings] in [System Settings] (from the Additional Functions screen).
Confirm the IP address of the machine. If you do not know the IP address of the machine,
consult the network administrator. (See Chapter 3, "Using a TCP/IP Network," in the
Network Guide.)
IMPORTANT
• You cannot connect to the machine via a proxy server. Specify the following settings if
you are working in an environment using a proxy server (as these settings differ
depending on the network environment, consult the network administrator).
- In the proxy server settings of your web browser, add the IP address of the machine to
the [Exceptions] (addresses that do not use a proxy) list.
• You cannot use SMS if your web browser is not set to enable cookies and JavaScript.
• You cannot use SDL/SSO if your web browser is not set to enable cookies, JavaScript,
and JavaApplet.
• When entering characters from your web browser, use characters that can be entered
from the touch panel display of the machine. Otherwise, the characters may not be
displayed or recognized correctly on the touch panel display.

This chapter explains how to register/edit user information for the Local Device Authentication
System of SSO, how to specify the number of user's logs displayed when logging in, and how
to set the user authentication system for SSO.
6-1
Logging in to the User Management/Setting Page
It is necessary to log in to the [User management/Setting] page in order to manage
users for the Local Device Authentication System of SSO, and specify the various
SSO settings.
IMPORTANT
• It is necessary to set SSO as the login service.
• Only users registered as administrators in SSO can log in.
• When using the Local Device Authentication System of SSO, make sure to edit the user
information of the administrator immediately after starting to use it, in order to prevent
unauthorized use. (See "Registering/Editing User Data for Local Device Authentication,"
on p. 6-9.)
• Do not use the browser's [Back]. If you use [Back] to change pages, SSO may not
operate correctly.
• If PortalService is installed, you can access as an administrator from the MEAP Portal
6 page.
SSO Management
NOTE
The default user name for the administrator of the Local Device Authentication System of
SSO is 'Administrator', and the default password is 'password' (case sensitive).

A
Active Directory
Directory Service used for Windows 2000 Server/Server 2003. A directory service
identifies all data and programs as well as their related attributes on the network,
according to organizational structure and physical limitations, and summarizes them
in a tree structure, so that the user can easily renew or browse through the
information. Active Directory is suitable for constructing a large size network because
of its capability to centrally manage not only accounting information, including the
user name and password for Windows, the current Windows environment
configuration, e-mail addresses, and personal addresses, but also resource
information such as group names, printer/shared resource names, computer names,
and security policies.
Applet
If the MEAP application is installed on the machine, an applet is created and a key to
access it is displayed on the touch panel display. 7
Application ID
Appendix
An identifier assigned to an application.
An ID is assigned to each MEAP application.
The MEAP system calculates counter values for each application ID.
C
Cookie
A file left on a user's computer when the user visits a web site. A cookie allows the
web site to recognize the user on subsequent visits. Cookies are generally used to
enable a user to automatically sign on to certain web sites and to customize the
features offered by such sites.
Glossary 7-17
D
Default Authentication (Department ID Management)
Select this login service if you are using the Department ID Management (or if no
other user authentication has been set). If Department ID Management (from the
Additional Functions screen of the imageRUNNER) is set to 'On', you can configure
the machine so that it can only be used after the Department ID and password have
been entered. The Department IDs and passwords can be entered from either the
touch panel display of the machine or the Remote UI.
F
File Descriptor
Descriptor used by the OS to distinguish between different files.
It contains information such as the file name, size, and identifier.
J
Java
A programming language developed by Sun Microsystems. Its multiple platform
compatibility, which allows it to operate independent of computer capability and
7 operating system, makes it very popular for developers of network applications. The
Java language included in the MEAP platform is called J2ME (Java2 Micro Edition).
Appendix
JavaScript
A script language applicable for Netscape Navigator (developed by the Netscape
Communications Corporation) and Internet Explorer. Utilization of JavaScript enables
creation of interactive web sites, featuring animated buttons and active clocks, using
only an HTML file.
L
License File
The license file is a file that the MEAP Application software manufacturer gives to a
user for permission to use the software. A license file is required to install any MEAP
application.
Login Service
A service for performing user authentication for an imageRUNNER machine. To
identify a certified user, a user name and password are required for authentication.
Login services for imageRUNNER include Default Authentication (Department ID
Management), SDL (Simple Device Login), and SSO (Single Sign-On).
7-18 Glossary
M
MEAP Application
Application that runs on MEAP (Multifunctional Embedded Application Platform).
Installed using an application file with the "jar" extension, and a license file with the
"lic" extension.
MEAP Specifications
The version of the MEAP function which can be executed using the MEAP system.
Some of the functions that use the MEAP system, such as MEAP applications, may
not be executable depending on the version of MEAP Specifications in the
imageRUNNER.
N
NetSpot Accountant
An optional software utility that analyzes, manages, and collects machine usage
information. Machine usage management can also be made by linking NetSpot
Accountant to a login service.
P
PortalService
7
Appendix
A MEAP application which displays and enables links to servlet-type MEAP
applications in the MEAP Portal page.
PortalService is included on the MEAP Administration Software CD-ROM.
Protocol
A set of rules that govern the transmission of data across a network. Examples of
protocols are FTP, DHCP, BOOTP, RARP, IPP, TCP/IP, SSL, and LDAP.
Proxy Server
A server that provides a cache of files available on remote servers that are slow or
expensive to access. The term "proxy server" normally refers to a World Wide Web
server that, on receiving a URL, tries to supply the requested file from its cache. If it
cannot locate the file there, the proxy server brings it from the remote server and
saves a copy in its cache so that the next request can be obtained locally.
Glossary 7-19
S
SDL (Simple Device Login)
A login service and login authentication method that you can use with one machine.
You can register user data in the memory of the machine from a web browser. In
addition, it enables you to manage user data by linking to the Department ID
Management function of the machine.
Security Agent
Security Agent is software that runs in Windows under authorization from a domain
controller manager. It is supplied on the MEAP Administration Software CD-ROM that
comes with the machine. To use SSO, Security Agent must be installed on the
computer that is connected to the Active Directory environment beforehand.
Servlet
A type of MEAP application that is displayed as a button in a web browser.
Socket
A virtual interface for using TCP/IP in applications. An application can specify a
socket (which is a combination of an address and a port) to open a line for sending
and receiving data. Therefore, a user will not have to worry about detailed
communications procedures.
7 SSL
Encryption protocol used to encrypt HTTP communications between a Web browser
Appendix
7-20 Glossary
■ 'Domain Authentication + Local Device Authentication'
A user authentication system which includes the functions of both Domain
Authentication and Local Device Authentication. This is useful for using Domain
Authentication to authenticate users registered/managed in Active Directory, and
using Local Device Authentication to authenticate temporary users which cannot be
added to Active Directory.
T
Thread
An execution unit of a program.
A program can have multiple threads running simultaneously, each performing
different tasks.
Memory usage increases with the number of threads running.
U
URL
Uniform Resource Locator. A standard way of specifying the location of an object,
usually a web page, on the Internet. The URL for a web page would look something
like this: "http://www.example.com/". Here, "http:" indicates that a web page is being
accessed, and "www.example.com" is the address of the server containing the web 7
page.
