Top climate panel to be reviewed: UN (Jakarta Post, 28/02/10)

The UN has agreed to conduct an independent review of the world's top climate science panel in
response to the ongoing controversy over several mistakes by the body in its fourth assessment report.
The report's conclusion, citing that Himalayan glaciers would melt by 2035 - not 2350 - turned out to be
wrong, allowing skeptics to raise doubts about climate science and accusations that fears of global
warming were exaggerated. The Nobel Prize-winning international scientific panel studying global
warming is seeking independent outside review on how it makes major reports.

New law may mean 40% fall in oil and gas production (Jakarta Post, 25/02/10)

The Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry fears implementation of a new environmental law may lead
to problems that could seriously hit production and investment in oil and gas, resulting in as much as a 40
percent decrease in national oil production targeted at 965,000 barrels oil per day (bopd) this year.

The environment law passed by the House of Representatives last year, requires business entities to
secure environmental permits prior to launching their operations. These permits are issued by a minister,
governor or regent, depending on the area of operation. A failure to secure the required environmental
permits would result in the termination of the business license for a given concession or working area.
Currently, development of at least 16 oil and gas development areas by Pertamina had been delayed due
to the failure to obtain the required environmental permits.

production. The ministry said that the mining companies were now working to adjust mining systems to
comply with the law, which could take some time.
