When "world music" was still just a concept, a young trumpet player emerged from apartheid South Africa and
landed alongside some of America's musical icons - Louis Armstrong, Harry Belafonte, Dizzy Gillespie & Miles
Davis - all of whom eventually took him under their wings. With his vibrant trumpet and flugelhorn solos, Masekela
has been featured on pop, R&B, disco, Afro-pop and jazz recordings ever since. He’s collaborated with some of the
world's foremost performers, such as Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley, Simply Red and Paul Simon and played an integral
role in Paul Simon’s Graceland tour. He also co-created the smash-hit Broadway musical Sarafina, for which he
was nominated for a Tony Award in 1988.
Masekela performed his Grammy Award-winning global hit “Grazing in the Grass” at the World Cup opening
ceremonies this year and astounded a new generation who has never heard this immense talent. Hailed around the world
for his stunning live performances, Masekela brings to life the connection between his African sound and his musical
alliance with the original American classical music: Jazz. He plans to dazzle the audience with all-time favorite hits like
“Stimela,” “Thanayi,” “Happy Mama,” “Lady” and, of course, “Grazing in the Grass.”
Articulate and brilliantly musical in a number of genres, Hugh Masekela has been a defining force in world music
and the struggle for human rights both in Africa and around the world. A living legend and genius musician, Hugh
connects with his audiences and believes, "You gotta' make them feel good!"
