15 Therefore, this is what the LORD Almighty says concerning the prophets:
"I will make them eat bitter food and drink poisoned water,
because from the prophets of Jerusalem
ungodliness has spread throughout the land."
to see or to hear his word? Who has listened and heard his word?
19 See, the storm of the LORD will burst out in wrath,
30 "Therefore," declares the LORD, "I am against the prophets who steal from one
another words supposedly from me. 31 Yes," declares the LORD, "I am against the
prophets who wag their own tongues and yet declare, `The LORD declares.'
32 Indeed, I am against those who prophesy false dreams," declares the LORD.
"They tell them and lead my people astray with their reckless lies, yet I did not send
or appoint them. They do not benefit these people in the least," declares the LORD.
Matthew 23:13-15,25-28
13 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the
kingdom of heaven in men's faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let
those enter who are trying to. 14
15 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over
land and sea to win a single convert, and when he becomes one, you make him
twice as much a son of hell as you are.
25 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the
outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26
Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also
will be clean.
27 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like
whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of
dead men's bones and everything unclean. 28 In the same way, on the outside you
appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wicked-
ness.

1 Timothy
Paul’s first letter to the young pastor, Timothy
Theme of 1 Timothy
“How people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household” (1 Timothy 3:15).
Purpose of 1 Timothy
according to Merrill Unger
in “Unger’s Bible Dictionary”
Paul had four main goals in penning this letter to Timothy.
1) To encourage Timothy to oppose false teaching (1:3-7, 18-20; 6:3-5, 20, 21)
2) To have Timothy appoint teachers in the church who will “watch their life and
doctrine closely” (3:1-13 & 4:16). They need not be “brilliant men”, but
they must be “good men.”
3) To instruct him in the management of church affairs (3:14,15)
4) To exhort him to diligence in the performance of his pastoral duties (4:6-6:2)
Paul came into contact with Timothy probably during his first missionary journey
Timothy lived in the town of Lystra in central Asia Minor –
(sometime around 48 A.D.).
present-day Turkey. Paul’s first experience in Lystra was anything but positive (read
about this amazing experience in Acts 14:8-20).
In this unlikely place Timothy was raised in a godly home. Though his father was
a Greek (a gentile), his mother, Eunice, and his grandmother, Lois, were devout
Christian Jews. These two women instructed Timothy in the Old Testament Scrip-
tures from his earliest childhood (2 Timothy 1:5 & 3:14-16).
When Paul visited Lystra on his second missionary journey (Acts 16:1-3) – three
years after his first visit – Timothy was a disciple so highly spoken of that Paul took
him along as his companion in ministry. When trouble arose in churches – and Paul
was prevented from visiting them personally – he often sent Timothy in his place.
This happened in Thessalonica (1 Thessalonians 3:1,2) and Corinth (1 Corinthians 4:17 &
16:10).

1 Timothy
(Please note - This is the second page of information on 1 Timothy)
When Paul sent Timothy to Philippi, he commended Timothy to them with the
highest praise that any minister of Christ can hope to receive. Paul says of Timothy:
“I have no one else like him, who takes a genuine interest in your welfare. For
everyone looks out for his own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. But you know
that Timothy has proved himself, because as a son with his father he has served
with me in the work of the gospel” (Philippians 2:20-22).
Commentator Martin Franzmann in “The Word of the Lord Grows” adds, “If
Paul was a fond father to Timothy, he was not a blind one. He knew his beloved child’s
weaknesses: Timothy was still young and apparently conscious of it as a handicap (1 Timothy
4:12). He was inclined to be timid (1 Cor. 16:10,11 & 2 Timothy 1:7).
Besides his health was not the best; his stomach troubled him, an ailment not un common
among sensitive and conscientious young men of God (1 Timothy 5:23).”
