ST. PAUL’S EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH

7th Sunday of Pentecost July 8 & 11, 2010

Theme of the Day

Rejoice in the Lord Always

Hymns: 440 420 428 769

Order of Service:
Thursday: Abbreviated Service
Sunday: Service of the Word (p. 38-44)

First Reading: Psalm 34 on page 80. We will sing this Psalm

Every verse in this Psalm begins with successive letters of the Hebrew al-
phabet. The theme of the Psalm is that God delivers us from all our fears.
The unusual form of the Psalm reminds us that no matter what trials we are
facing—God has it covered “from A to Z.”

Second Reading: Matthew 6:25-34

Jesus teaches us not to worry but to trust in God. Just as God takes care of
the birds of the air and the flowers of the field, so will he take care of us—for
we are worth more than many sparrows. Worry robs us of joy and peace.
Trust in God gives us joy.

Sermon Text: Philippians 4:4-7

How to Have Joy in Hard Times

1) Make your pit a pulpit (Exalt Christ)

2) Make your problem a prayer (Seek Christ)
3) Make your puzzle a plan (Trust Christ)
4) Make your pressure his peace (Rest in Christ)

Matthew 6:25-34
25 "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or

about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the
body more important than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or
reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not
much more valuable than they? 27 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to
his life?
28 "And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They

do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was
dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is
here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O
you of little faith?
31 So do not worry, saying, `What shall we eat?' or `What shall we drink?' or `What

shall we wear?' 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father
knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and
all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomor-
row, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Philippians 4:4-7
4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evi-

dent to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything,
by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the
peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your
minds in Christ Jesus.

GOOD NEWS FOR THE ESCAPE TEEN CENTER

The Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Escape—Ken York—wrote the fol-
lowing e-mail to members of the Board this past week:

Dear “Team Escape”,

I wanted to inform all of you that the board

voted and the results were unanimous to hire
Chrissy (Christine Olson) full-time based on the
informational spreadsheet provided to analyze
the issue.

I just got off the phone with Chrissy and she has
accepted the position as our full-time Financial
Development Director. I am excited to have her
“work her magic” to help take the Escape to the
next level as far as finances are concerned.
This will allow Sy and Michelle to continue their
outstanding programs with Chrissy running the
financial end in the background. This is an
exciting time for our continued growth.

Thank You all for your dedication to the Escape. Have a wonderful 4th of July.

Pastor Mike received the following report from our contact in Pakistan:
I was a privilege to examine 66 sick people at near by Christian Basti. We reached
back from Islamabad at 2 O’clock in the after noon which took us 8 hours. A lot of
the patients had been waiting at the hospital, many of them returned home after
waiting so long. I admitted many patients and also examined 20 patients. After hav-
ing a rest of one hour at 5pm we were at Chakara for our free clinic. It was a hot and
humid evening. The small room
was full of people. It is a great re-
lief for the patients that they could
come nearby and get their
checkup done. They could get
free medicine and get the U/s
done free of cost indeed all this
comfort and blessing in their lives
in this hot and humid weather is
from all of you in USA by your
support these poor and needy
people of very low income class
who are mostly laborers sweepers
or cleaning the houses, can get
free medicine and fee checkup.
We are thankful to you for sup-
porting our community and people of Pakistan. Please convey our and all the pa-
tients gratitude to all the people who support this program.

Today people from quite far away colonies had also come. Many Muslim people
also came for checkup. Mostly ladies and children were examined. A good tea with
chicken rolls, Samosas and patties was served by Mrs. Masiah Naureem. We ar-
rived back home at 10’ O clock. Now we will take our daughter and son out for din-
ner. While we were taking the cold lemonade drinks we were feeling very relaxed
and happy. At that time I received a call from hospital. There was lady came with ob-
structed labor. I told my family that we have two choices either I have live you and
come back to take you after surgery or we all can go right now. Every body thought
that we should go all together back. When I reached in the hospital the patient was
in agene and the relatives were very much worried and upset. I took this patient
strait away to the operation theater. Cesarean section was done. The baby was very
in distress and I have to resuscitate the baby. When I reached home the cooking
was started the home was smelling with good smell of food. Now this was the time
to enjoy the good home made food. I thank God that all is well that ends well.

IN FORWARD IN CHRIST MAGAZINE ON HOMOSEXUALITY

Forward in Christ, the official magazine of WELS, is continuing its coverage of the
topic of homosexuality with a profile of Suzie Neas, a WELS woman who left the gay
lifestyle with the help of the Holy Spirit.
"I shared my story hoping that some can relate and those wanting lasting peace and
relief from the heavy burden of same-sex attractions will find it by humbly confessing
before God," says Neas, a member at Wisconsin Lutheran Chapel, Madison, Wis.
"The Holy Spirit works to change the heart of anyone who is penitent."
Neas left the homosexual lifestyle behind seven years ago. "I denied, rationalized,
and justified my behavior for too long," she says. "Through hearing God's Word, the
Holy Spirit worked in my hardened heart, softening it so that I could see the error of
my ways."
Now she is talking to Bible study groups, high school students, and others about her
journey. She says, "I encourage anyone who has a loved one who
embraces this lifestyle to love them always, but you do not have to love or accept
their behavior."
This is the second article in a series on leaving the gay lifestyle. The first article
shared the story of Scott Barefoot, a member at Grace, Falls Church, Va., who left
the gay lifestyle seven years ago after discovering he had HIV/AIDS. Check out the
magazine at www. nph.net/periodicals.
