Assignment-2

(deadline of submission: 27th Oct 2014)

1. Sketch the transmitted direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) signal s(t)c(t) over the time
interval [0, 2Tb] (two bit times) assuming that s(t) is BPSK modulated with carrier frequency
100 MHz and T is 1 µs. Assume that the first data bit is a 0 and the second is a 1. Assume that
there are ten chips per bit and the chips alternate between +1 and -1 with the first chip equal to
+1

2. A microwave transmitter with an output of 1 W at 2.5 GHz is used in a transmission system,

where both the transmitting and receiving antennas are parabolas, each 0.5 m in diameter.
Suppose the two antennas are directionally aligned and are 10 kms apart.

i) What is the effective radiated power of the transmitted signal, in Watt and dB?
ii) What is the available signal power out of the receiving antenna?

3. Consider a cellular system with hexagonal cells of radius R = 5 km. Suppose the required SIR that
the system aims to achieve is 20 dB.

i) Find the minimum distance D between the cell centers using the same frequency.
ii) What is the minimum reuse factor N achievable by the hexagonal cellular system that will
guarantee this minimum distance?
iii) If the total number of channels for the system is 1550, find the number of channels that can
be assigned to each cell. Calculate the number of calls/hour/cell and the number of
calls/hour/km.
