1. Explain briefly about the following:

2. a) Explain about stress- strain relations?
b) A cantilever beam of span ‘L’ is subjected to appoint load at free end. Derive
equations for the deflection at free end by using Raleigh-Ritz method. Assume
polynomial displacement function?

3. a) Define the minimum potential energy and derive an equation for the potential
energy?
b) Find the deflection at the centre of a simply supported beam of span length ‘L’
subjected to UDL throughout its length using (i) Point-Collocation Method (ii) sub-
domain method (iii) Least square Method (iv) Galerkin’s Method.

4. a) Explain about the basic steps involved in finite element method?
b) Derive the formation of stiffness matrix for stepped bar due to axial loading
conditions?

5. a) A stepped bar is subjected to an axial load of 300 KN as shown in fig. Find the
nodal displacements, element stresses and support reactions?

b) Consider the bar as shown in figure. An axial load P=200×10 3N is applied as shown.
Using penalty approaches for handling boundary conditions do the following.
(i) Determine the nodal displacements (ii) Determine the stress in each material (iii)
Determine the reaction forces.
