UNIT I
2. A beam ABC of length 8m is supported at A and B 6m apart with an overhang BC of 2m. it carries two point
loads of 60kN and 20kN at distances 2m and 8m respectively support A. using virtual work method find out
deflections under load points. Take E= 2 x105 N/mm2, I= 2x108 mm4. (12m)

3. A simply supported beam of span 6m is subjected to a uniformly distributed load of 20kN/m over the entire
span and a point load of 60kN at 2m from left support using Castigliano’s first theorem. Determine the
deflection under 60kN load. Take E= 2 x105 N/mm2, I= 2x108 mm4. (12m)

UNIT II

4. A uniformly distributed load of 60kN/m, 8m long, crosses girder of 30m span from left to right calculate the
maximum shear force and bending moment at a section 12m from left hand support. Also find out the
maximum shear and the absolute maximum bending moment in the beam. (12m)

5. Tree wheel loads 35kN,140kN and 140kN spaced 4.5m apart from each other ,with the 140kN load in the lead
pass over a simply supported bridge girder of span 24m . Determine the maximum shear and moment
developed at a point 9m from left support. What is the absolute maximum moment in the girder and where
does it occur? (12m)
UNIT III
6. Abeam AB 6m long is fixed at A and simply supported at B and carries a point of 200kN at 4m from A. Find
the fixing moment at A and the reactions at the two supports .Draw shear force and bending moment
diagrams. (12m)

7. A continuous beam ABC fixed at the ends is loaded as shown in Fig.(1). Find the reaction and support
moments Draw also Bending moment and shear force diagrams. (12m)

8. Analyse the hinged base portal frame shown in Fig.(6) by strain energy method. (12m)

4. a) Define porosity, specific yield and specific retention. (6M)


b) Calculate the discharge from a tube well of radius 10cm penetrating fully into a confined
aquifer of 20m thick and having a permeability of 40m/day. The draw down in the well is
3m and zero drawdown is at 300m distance from the well. (6M)

b) A channel section has to be designed for the following data using Lacey’s theory. (6M)

UNIT – I

1. a) Write the objectives of structural design. [4M]


b) Briefly explain different codes are used to design of a concrete structures. [4M]

2. A doubly reinforced rectangular beam of overall size 230 mm wide × 550 mm depth is reinforced with
2 no. 20 mm diameter bars at top and 4 no. 20 mm diameter bars at bottom. Find out the moment of
resistance of the beam. If this beam is subjected to a moment of 72 kNm, Find the maximum stresses
developed in concrete and steel. Consider d = 500 mm, d’=50 mm. The materials are M20 grade
concrete and HYSD reinforcement of grade Fe 415. [12M]

UNIT – II

3. a) Derive the actual depth of N.A (Xu) and M.R of singly reinforced section. [6M]
b) An R.C.C beam of size 230mm wide × 460mm effective depth is reinforced with 3 no. 32mm
diameter bars. Find out the moment of resistance of beam. Also state type of beam. The materials are
M30 grade concrete and HYSD reinforcement of grade Fe 415. [6M]

4. A tee beam of effective flange width 1000mm, thickness of slab 100mm, width of rib 250mm and
effective depth of 360mm is reinforced with 6-25mm diameter bars as a tension reinforcement and 2-
20mm diameter bars as a compression reinforcement. Calculate factored moment resistance. The
materials are M20 grade concrete and HYSD reinforcement of grade Fe 415. [12M]

UNIT – III

5. Determine the shear capacity of the beam section 230mmX720mm effective depth reinforced with 5no of 16mm
diameter bars of Fe415 grade steel (3 straight+ 2 bent at 45 degree) and 8 mm stirrups of Fe415 at a spacing of
300mm c/c. Concrete grade is M20. [12M]

6. A simply supported beam of span 5m carries central concentrated load of 90Kn. The size of the beam is
250mmX600mm overall depth with a R/F of 3no of 20mm diameter bars are provided as a tension
reinforcement. The materials used are M20 & Fe415. Calculate short term deflection. [12M]
UNIT – IV

7. A simply supported beam of span 6m is subjected a udl of 25kn/m inclusive of its own weight. Design the
suitable cross section. The materials are M20 grade concrete and HYSD reinforcement of grade Fe 415.

8. A simply supported rectangular slab is resting on four edges with a span of 12.65m and 4m are
respectively. Live load on the slab is 4Kn/Sqm. Materials used are M20 grade concrete and Fe415
grade steel. Design the slab. [12M]

UNIT – V

9. Design a rectangular water tank of size 5m x 4m x 6m deep resting on firm ground. The materials are
M30 grade concrete and HYSD reinforcement of grade Fe 415 [12M]

10. Design an underground water tank of size 4m x 6m x 4m for the following data:
Type of soil: Submerged sandy soil, with γ S = 16kN/m3, φ = 300.
Water table can rise up to ground level grade of concrete and steels are: M25 & Fe415. [12M]

UNIT – I
1. (a) Explain the different types of steels used in the construction of steel structures. (4 M)
(b) Draw the stress-strain curve of the structural steel and explain the salient features. (5 M)
(c) Explain the fatigue behaviour of structural steel components. (3 M)

2. Two plates each of size, 250 mm wide and 10 mm thickness, are required to be joined so as to carry an
ultimate axial load of 450 kN. Design a double cover butt joint using M 20 bolts of grade 4.6 and also find
the efficiency of the joint. Steel is of grade E250 and confirming to IS: 2062. (12 M)

UNIT – II

3. Determine the axial tensile load carrying capacity of a single angle ISA 100 × 100 × 10 connected to a
gusset plate of thickness 12 mm using four M 22 bolts of grade 4.6 at pitch of 60 mm centre to centre in a
single line. Use the yield strength of steel is 250 MPa and its ultimate tensile strength is 415 MPa. (12 M)

4. Design a laced column with two channels back-to-back carrying an ultimate axial load of 1250 kN. The
unsupported length of the column is 9 m and the column is restrained in position but not in direction at
both ends. Steel is of grade Fe 410. Design the lacing system using welding. (12 M)

UNIT – III

5. A simply supported main beam ISMB 600 @ 1226 N/m has an effective span of 9 m. Two secondary
beams transmit the roof load at a distance of 3 m from each end of the main beam. Determine the safe
load the two secondary beams can transmit if the main beam is effectively restrained laterally by the floor
beams. teel is of grade Fe 410. (12 M)

6. Design a simply supported built-up beam of effective span 4.2 m carrying uniformly distributed working
load of 140 kN/m excluding the self weight. The overall depth of the beam is restricted to 400 mm. The
compression flange of the beam is laterally supported throughout. Steel is of grade Fe 410. (12 M)
UNIT – IV

7. Design a simply supported laterally unsupported beam of effective span of 6 m subjected to a maximum
ultimate shear force of 200 kN and maximum ultimate bending moment of 150 kNm. Steel is of grade Fe
410. (12 M)

8. Design a simply supported beam of span effective 4.5 m is subjected to total uniformly distributed
working load of 60 kN inclusive of self weight. The beam is laterally unsupported throughout. Steel is of
grade E 250. (12 M)
UNIT – V
9. Design a seat bolted connection to transfer a factored beam end reaction of 150 kN. The beam section is
of ISMB 373 N/m to be connected to the flange of a column section ISHB 200@ 373 N/m. Steel is of
grade Fe 410 and bolts are of grade 4.6.Draw a neat sketch of the connection details. (12M)

10. Design a bolted bracket connection to support a factored end reaction of 450 kN as shown in Fig. 1. Use

b) A sample of clay has the liquid limit of 60% and a shrinkage limit of 25%. If the sample has a volume of 10ml at

4. a) Explain the soil components as per Indian soil classification. (6M)
b) A soil has the following characteristics:
Percentage of passing 75µ sieve = 58% . Liquid limit=40%. Plasticity index= 10%. Liquid limit of oven dried
sample = 25%.
Classify the soil according to Indian standard classification. (6M)

5. a) Explain the constant head permeability. (6M)
b) A falling head permeability test was performed on a sample of clean, uniform sand. One minute was required for
the initial head of 100 cm to fall to 50cm in the stand pipe of the cross sectional area 1.50cm2. If the sample was 4
cm in diameter and 30cm long, calculate the coefficient of permeability of the sand. (6M)

b) The maximum dry density of a sample by the light compaction test is 1.78 g/ml at an optimum moisture content
of 15%. Find the air voids and the degree of saturation. G=2.67. What would be the corresponding value of dry
density on the zero air void line at optimum water content? (7M)

b) The following results were obtained from a standard compaction test on a sample of soil.

The volume of the mould used was 950ml.Make necessary calculations and plot the compaction curve and

8. a) Explain the laboratory consolidation test. (6M)
b) In a laboratory, consolidation test was carried out on a specimen of clay 3cm thick. The sample was drained at
top and bottom. The time required for 50% consolidation of the sample was observed to be 15 minutes.
Determine the coefficient of consolidation of clay. Calculate time required for 50% , 90% consolidation for this
clay deposit in the field 3m thick and drained at both the ends. (6M)

9. a) Explain the merits and demerits of triaxial tests. (6M)


b) The following results were obtained from a series of consolidated undrained test on soil, in which the pore water
was not determined. Determine the cohesion intercept and the angle of shearing resistance. (6M)
