7. Explain Strain energy density:
8. State and explain Castigliano’s Second theorem:
9. What are the limitations of Euler’s theory for long columns?
10. Briefly discuss the importance of theories of failures:

PART B
(Answer one full question from each module, each question carries 14 marks)
MODULE I
11. a) The state of stress at a point is characterized by the components σxx = 12, σyy (7)
= 9, σzz = 4, τxy = 4, τyz = 5, τxz = 1. All units in MPa. Find the values of
principal stresses.
b) For the given state of stress: σxx = 2, σyy = 5, σzz = -5 (All units in MPa), (7)
determine the magnitude of normal stress and shear stress acting on the plane
with direction cosines nx = 0.21, ny = 0.78.
OR
12. a) Define principal stresses and principal planes in a 2-D stress system. Write (5)
the equations to determine the same:
b) The state of plane stress at a point with respect to the xy-axes is given as σxx = (9)
40 MPa, σyy = 20 MPa, τxy = 16 MPa. Using Mohr’s circle, determine (1) the
principal stresses and principal planes; (2) the maximum absolute shear
stress.
MODULE II

13. a) Draw the stress-strain diagram obtained from the standard tension test on a (7)
ductile specimen. Explain the salient points:

b) The composite bar consists of a 20-mm-diameter segment AB (Steel) and 50- (7)
mm-diameter segments DA and CB (Aluminium). Determine the average
normal stress in each segment due to the applied load. Also determine the
total extension of the bar: Take Esteel = 210 GPa and EAluminium = 70 GPa.

OR
14. a) Write short note on thermal stresses (4)

b) A steel bar 30mm diameter is enclosed in an aluminium tube of 35 mm (10)

internal diameter and 60 mm external diameter. Both bar and tube is of same
length and fastened rigidly at their ends. The composite bar is free of stress at
25°C. To what temperature the assembly must be heated to generate a
compressive stress of 50 MPa in steel bar? Also determine the stress in
aluminium tube. Esteel = 200 GPa and Ealuminium = 70 GPa, αsteel = 12×10-6/°C
and αaluminium = 13×10-6/0C
MODULE III
15. a) An 8m long beam simply supported at the ends carries a point load of 20kN (9)
at 2m from the left end and a uniformly distributed load of 10kN/m on the
right half of the span. Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams
indicating principal values.

b) Compare the strength of a hollow shaft of diameter ratio 0.50 to that of a (5)
solid shaft by considering the permissible shear stress. Both the shafts are of
same material, of same length and weight.
OR
16. a) State the assumptions in the theory of simple bending. Derive the bending (8)
equation:
b) A CI beam has an I-section with top flange 80 mm x 40 mm, web 120 mm x (6)
20 mm and bottom flange 160 mm x 40 mm. If the tensile stress is not to
exceed 30 N/mm2 and compressive stress 90 N/mm2, what is the maximum

material properties of the body for axial, bending and torsional loads.
b) A simply supported beam of 20m span carries two point loads of 4 kN and 10 (5)
kN at 8m and 12 m from left end. Determine the deflection under each load
and maximum deflection. Take EI = 200 x 1012 Nmm2.
OR
18. a) Illustrate the application of Macauley’s method to determine slope and (9)
deflection of a cantilever beam.
b) A cantilever beam of span 10 m carries a udl of 5 kN/m at a distance of 3 m (5)
from the free end. Calculate the slope and deflection at the free end.
