SAURASHTRA REGIONAL CULTURAL CENTRE AT RAJKOT

INTRODUCTION:

Public spaces reflects the citizen’s daily life rituals, as well as tourist fascinations and their
nature that denotes the values which the city holds close to its heart as well as shape the
impression and perception of the city.A public space is a social space that is generally open
and accessible to all the people.It is where social interactions happen, festival and
celebrations take place, where an exchange of ideas occur, where cultures are allowed to
breathe and intermix.These spaces are the breathing spaces in a city’s urban fabric.These
spaces have geographically, architecturally, locationally & spatially strong design features as
an anchor. They are strategically located within the overall dynamics of the city.
Cultural public spaces are one of the significant public spaces in an urban environment. They
act as a centre of a larger community and strengthen the heart and soul of the city. All
major Indian cities have examples of such places which represents the culture and history of
the city. Architecture is one of the mediums to convey the cultural beliefs. Architecture is a
manifestation and expression of culture and it should respond and add to the cultural needs
& values.
Saurashtra has a glorious past & history of its own about which people are not much aware
because there is no place or any cultural centre to know about it. Rajkot is the centre of
Saurashtra region. It is strategically located in the centre of saurashtra region in the aji
basin. Hence it is appropriate place to propose Saurashtra Regional Cultural Centre.RMC has
also proposed cultural centre at Rajkot under the Smart city proposal.

AIM:
To represent the regional character of Saurashtra by designing Regional cultural centre at
Rajkot.

OBJECTIVE:
 To understand the relation between architecture and culture.
 To study and understand the culture and history of Saurashtra region.
 To understand the cultural aspect of public space.
METHODOLOGY:
 Literature review
 Relevant primary & secondary case studies.
 Site study.
 SWOT analysis
