Leonardo Fibonacci

Leonardo Fibonacci was an Italian mathematician from Pisa, Italy. He was born in the
mid 1170’s and is known as one the greatest mathematicians of his time. Fibonacci’s Fibonacci
sequence is his greatest mathematical achievements. The Fibonacci sequence is shown all
around nature from bananas to apples to flowers to pinecones, this sequence can be found all
over.

Many believe that Fibonacci didn’t know of the importance of his works. However, this is
not known. This may be because the importance of Fibonacci’s sequence wasn’t discovered
until after his death. Fibonacci came up with his sequence when he was trying to discover how
many rabbits he would have if he started with two rabbits, with a month to mature, how many
rabbits he would have in a year.

This is the Fibonacci sequence “1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34,55… If you add two numbers in the
sequence next to each other, the sum of those two numbers will be next in the sequence. For
example, one plus one equals two, so “1,1,2”. Another example would be two plus three equals
five, so “2,3,5”. This sequence can be found all around nature. For example, if you cut a banana
in half you’ll find it has three sections, or an apple cut in half has five.

Leonardo Fibonacci was a great mathematician who has helped in many mathematical
discoveries thanks to his Fibonacci sequence. His sequence has been used by many
mathematicians in there theories therefore also helping in other mathematical discoveries. Many
other uses have been found for Fibonacci’s sequence as well. With Fibonacci also introducing
the west to arabic numerals there is no doubt mathematics wouldn’t be the same without
Fibonacci.
