April 2011
PREFACE
The CAD Standards Guideline is intended to ensure that work produced for the University of Connecticut will
integrate into existing CAD files maintained on campus with Architectural, Engineering, and Building Services.
At the Pre-Construction Meeting, a CAD coordination session will be held between the university and those
producing CAD files. The purpose of the meeting is to review the CAD Standard Guidelines; thus ensuring
expectations are clearly communicated to those producing CAD and Contract Documents for University of
Connecticut Construction Projects. The enclosed CAD Standard Checklist is provided to the consultant at the
meeting and is to accompany all electronic file submissions to the university. Final payment from the
University will only be rendered once CAD files have been submitted and approved in conformance with the
CAD Standards Guideline, Consultant Agreements and Owner/Contractor Agreements made with the university.
The University of Connecticut recognizes the potential benefits of Building Information Modeling (BIM)
software and has developed elementary standards for A/E consultant firms that work in this media. As the
technology continues to evolve, the university will review these standards and update them at regular intervals
to ensure consistency in computer model submissions. The design team will be required to use parametric BIM
authoring software for the creation of models that include all geometry, physical characteristics and product data
needed to describe the design and construction project in detail. Submitted files should be in AUTODESK
REVIT format (.rvt) or must be Revit compatible. All Revit submissions shall also be accompanied by a
converted version of the drawing set in the latest version of AUTOCAD.
The University maintains REVIT, CAD, PDF and TIFF files for many buildings on all of the UConn campuses
and shares available files with consultants upon request. All files provided by the University of Connecticut are
the “Best Available Data” at the time of transfer and are intended for informational use only. The University of
Connecticut does not warranty the accuracy of existing files. Prior to the commencement of any work,
consultants shall be responsible for field verifying data to ensure accuracy.

CAD STANDARDS
This document serves as a specification for producing and delivering drawings in AUTOCAD format for
University of Connecticut – Architectural, Engineering, and Building Services Construction Projects. The
guidelines ensure the successful use of CAD systems and data throughout the University. The requirements
must be followed and met by the main A/E firm and their sub A/E firms. Submitted CAD drawings that do not
conform to the guidelines will be returned. Drawings are to be re-submitted once the requirements have been
met. Before a project is closed out and final payment from the University of Connecticut rendered, all specified
materials must be submitted to the appropriate University of Connecticut Project Manager in accordance with
the standards and instructions described in this document.
A/E firms must submit a signed copy of the CAD Standard Checklist with all CAD drawings being delivered
during any phase (a. Permit/Bid Set, b. Construction Documents/Contract Set, c. As-Built/Record Set) of
the project. The signed CAD Standard Checklist ensures that the A/E firm has reviewed all materials and that
they are being submitted to the required standards and guidelines set forth in this document. To obtain the latest

Border/Title Block
The University of Connecticut provides a standard coversheet and border/title block for use in all University of
Connecticut Drawings which is to be placed into the sheet files.
The coversheet and border/title block contain attributes that must be filled out with the required, project
specific information. Additionally, the full titles, addresses and logos of the Project Architect and
Engineer must be placed in proper area. Please see below for the correct placement and format.
All Drawing Revisions must be properly noted in the revision list and must depict the number and date
of revisions. Revisions must be noted clearly and shall include at least 6 lines for revisions. Revisions
on the drawing areas shall be clouded and tagged with a delta triangle with the corresponding revision
number it is related to. The revision number in the triangle must coincide with its revision in the
revision list.
Drawing Title
The A/E title block and name of project shall be in a vertical format down the right-hand side of the drawing is
preferred.
Project Name shall match the title of the project on the project budget sheet (EPBS).
Project Number.
Building Number.

Indicate drawing number and number of sheets
Page 11 of 35
Drawing Number
The A/E shall confirm the building number with UCONN’s project manager. This number shall be on all
drawings. Use:
Model Space. Floor plans, elevations, sections, relevant dimensions and other drawings shall be in
model space only.
Paper Space. Each CAD file shall be set up to contain only one title block in paper space which
references the building model(‘s) contained in model space. Tabs may not be created to accommodate
multiple sheets.
1. Xref’s must be inserted into sheet files as an attachment using the Relative Path as the Path Type,
utilizing the file structure shown in diagram 1.0. By setting the xref to Relative Path, drawings can be
moved as needed and still maintain their links, eliminating any further maintenance to re-link the Xref’s.
The Absolute Path method of attaching Xref’s will not be permitted. Xref’s must be inserted using a
0,0,0 reference point.
2. Xref’s can also be bound and packaged. Binding an xref to a drawing makes the xref a permanent part
of the design drawing. Keeping all files together as a package allows functionality in any situation.
This method shall apply to all submissions that do not use relative paths.
3. The University of Connecticut Standard Border shall be used. The text/attributes shall be inserted into
each sheet as an independent element. The text block shall not be altered (exploded, rearranged, etc.) in
any way.
LAYERING
Diagram 2.0
The UCONN standard for layering follows the American Institute of Architects (AIA) CAD layer Guidelines.
The layer name formatting will consist of a two to four sequence of identifiers. Below are three examples:
The discipline code will be followed by a major group designation which identifies the building system.
The major group will be followed by a minor group designation to further define the major group. The major
group can also be followed by a status designation.
The status designation will further define the work; when phases of the work need to be differentiated.
Examples are shown below:

Policy on CAD FILE TRANSLATION
The University of Connecticut requires DWG files and CAD drawings that can be manipulated using standard
AutoCAD drafting procedures. Non-compliance with this policy may result in the rejection of CAD files
submitted at project closeout and may result in delayed rendering of final project payment. DXF files are not an
acceptable substitution for DWG CAD file deliverables.
For firms translating their native CAD, RVT, or other file formats into an AutoCAD format that is compatible
with the university, should verify they are delivering error- free CAD files. Thorough file translation testing is
recommended before the drawing development phase of the project. Early detection of possible file conversion
problems will allow for corrective measures before project closeout.
To ensure consistency in the updating, use, and archiving of CAD files; a standardized system will be
implemented to ensure drawings will be identified with relevant file numbers during the initial phases of each
project. The recommended Procedure Is Outlined As Follows:
1. The Architect/Engineer/Designer shall ascertain the amount and type of drawings required.
2. The Architect/Engineer/Designer shall provide UCONN with a list indicating the amount of drawings,
the type of drawings to be provided and the proposed files names for the associated drawings.
3. UCONN shall review the list of file names proposed for drawing submissions to ensure compliance with
CAD submission standards.
4. All pertinent information concerning each drawing file shall be indicated in the drawing list including
the file name, campus location, building number, drawing type, file name and number. Drawing type
designations shall be by discipline i.e. Civil, Landscape, Architectural, Structural, Mechanical,
Electrical & Fire Protection etc…
5. For sizeable projects, additional numbers in the same numbering sequence will be reserved to insure
project number continuity in the event additional drawing number assignments are required. (Upon
request and when applicable)
6. The Consultant will submit a hard copy project log designed to follow projects from inception until
completion. The log will contain drawing and project status on an on-going basis, and will be submitted
with CAD file submissions.
Proper file names allow archiving of CAD files at project completion. Files that contain the proper
year of construction, building name and sheet number will not be in conflict with other files
Page 29 of 35
already stored on the university’s file storage system. Drawing names should contain no more than
14 characters. Drawing file names should also be under a file folder that clearly indicates the project
number and project name. Tiff & PDF files should be named in a similar format.
Sample significant building drawing file numbers and submitted drawing lists should look like this:

Doors should be numbered with a system which reflects the room number to which the door allows access. For
example, the door to room 104 should be labeled “104/1” or “104/A” or similar system.
After the final plans are approved, the A/E shall prepare a separate room numbering plan, showing all rooms and
spaces, with numbers as indicated above, and names. This drawing shall also be transmitted to the University in
CAD format on a computer disc (see CAD File below for submitting procedures). All CAD files must be
submitted in the most current version of AUTOCAD. Drawing shall show distinctions in wall thickness of
major walls and interior partitions. Plan shall also show all entrances and exits, stairways, elevators, service
areas and major architectural features, such as window walls, plazas, ramps and loading docks. Space Planning
drawings do not need dimensions shown, and details not pertinent of the general layout should be omitted.
SET PROCESS
These procedures pertain to submissions that are required for contractual purposes per the university’s Project
Contractual Agreements with consultants and contractors. The Phases of the bid process and construction are as
follows:
1. Permit/Bid Set – (To be submitted to the Design Project Manager) 100% Design drawings used for the
bidding process. The submitting of this set shall be as per the Project’s Contractual Agreement. All
