Title of the Study:

Assessment of Knowledge, Attitude and Practices of Parents with ADHD Children: Basis for
Parent Training Intervention

Chapter I – Introduction

At this moment, all over the world, there are parents and teachers who are struggling to raise
or teach some children with exceptionalities. These children may have been born with some
condition, the cause of which is unknown, such as ADHD. They may have developed the
condition as a result of experiences in the womb, as is the case with fetal alcohol effect. Or
they may have acquired a condition, such as traumatic brain injury, in their early years of
development. At times these children behave in ways that are worrisome and baffling to the
adults who love them and want to help them learn. Many of these parents and teachers – and
we may be one of them – find themselves using ineffective ways or strategies and often deeply
unsatisfying.

Background of the Study:

The knowledge, attitude and practices of parents in handling their children with
exceptionalities, specifically on ADHD is very vital as they play a great role in the growth and
education of their children in preparing for their future. Their ability to have the right
knowledge will enhance their practice and attitude in handling their children with ADHD.
Lack of knowledge about this condition may lead a parent to endorse to counseling over
medication. Yet after learning more about this condition, these same parents might become
more accepting on the condition of their children.

Statement of the Problem:

This study aims to assess the knowledge, attitude and practices of parents in handling their
children with ADHD in San Marcelino Zambales. Specifically, it sought to answer the
following questions:

1. What is the profile of the parents in terms of: age, marital status, education,
occupation, and the number of children in the family?
2. What is the level of attitude of parents in handling their children with ADHD?
3. Are their significant differences in attitude of parents in handling their children in
terms of beliefs, feelings and actions or practices?
4. What feasible intervention program can be designed to improve the level of
knowledge and attitude of parents in handling children with ADHD?

Objectives:

1. How may the demographic profile of parents be described in terms of the age,
marital status, education, occupation, and the number of children in the family?
2. How may the knowledge, attitude and practices of parents in managing the behavior
of their children with ADHD be evaluated?
3. How may the separation anxiety of the preschoolers be measured?
4. Is there a significant difference in the knowledge, attitude and practices of the
parents in handling their children after the intervention?

Null Hypothesis:

The study will test the following null hypothesis:

The outcome of the present study presents that there is no significant

difference in the knowledge, attitude and practices of the parents in handling their
children with special needs specifically on children with ADHD and thus there is no
need for parent training intervention but rather an enhancement program is advised.

Significance of the Study:

The finding of the study will be significant to the following groups of people who
have direct connection with the children:

To the Parents of the children with ADHD, it is important also for the parents to
acquire and add to their knowledge regarding their children’s condition, and increase the
level of their attitude in handling their children with ADHD. This is to boost their
confidence and trust to the teachers too and to the educational system. Also, it will help
them understand the use of the programs being presented and implemented in developing
their children’s skills and whole being.

To the children with ADHD, through the findings of this study, they will be best
served in the classroom and more specifically in their homes with their parents’ improved
knowledge and attitudes towards educating them. More than that, through proper learning
they will develop life and social skills needed as they grow older.
To the teachers, through the results of this study, the teachers will be proactive in
identifying the barriers and obstacles learners’ encounter in attempting to access the
opportunities to learn to their full potential. They will get acquainted on the effectiveness of
the Parent Training enhancement program whether it be an intervention or an enhancement
in developing the student’s comprehension skills.

To the institution, the results of the research may provide a better understanding of
the attitude and practices of the parents and in this way they could help the parents to assess
and create, design or modify training interventions on how to handle their children with
special need particularly on ADHD.

To the society/community, with the results of the research, this will help the society /
community understand better the children with exceptionalities and support the special
educational needs programs of the community and thus boost the children’s moral and self-
esteem.

To the future researchers, with the results of the current study, they can refer to this
in developing new assessments or create and give seminars depending on the parents’ needs
in making and developing programs to enhance knowledge in handling their children with
ADHD. This will also help them highlight possible areas for focus in interventions.

Scope and Delimitation

This study confined its inquiry on how the parents’ knowledge, attitude and practices
in handling children with ADHD be a basis for parent training intervention. It can be used
to develop the knowledge, attitude and practices of parents with ADHD. It sought to gauge
the effectiveness of the intervention to resolve the poor handling of parents with children
with exceptionalities.

The selection of respondents was only limited to parents who have children with
ADHD between 2-8 years old in San Marcelino Zambales.

Definition of Terms:
