426 Waste management

project
By- Aryaman Shodhan
Introduction

Global warming is one of the more prominent

problems in the modern day and its drastic effect is
often underestimated. One of the major causes of
global warming is pollution. Everyday several tons of
waste are dumped into wastelands where they
accumulate and cause scenic pollution as well as
release toxic gases if burned which enhance the effect
of global warming. Several animals choke on this
waste and die. Their rotting bodies add to the gas
release. To overcome the problem of “dumping”, here
is a simple initiative to mark the beginning of living in
a cleaner, more livable environment.
Objectives

—  Reduce the amount of waste dumped onto the land

which results in scenic pollution and causes
leaching out of chemicals into the land

—  Generate revenue for the building by selling dry

and wet waste

—  Reduce the opportunity cost of recycling waste- cost

of finding an area to dump the waste
Materials Needed
Material Amount Location Status

Process

• Each house will segregate their waste into two categories- dry and wet.

1
• There must be two separate dustbins for each type of waste in every house.
•  Kitchen waste like fruit and vegetable peels, all kinds of food waste, dust
after sweeping, etc. will go into one dustbin and recyclables like glass metal

2 and plastic bottles, wood, metal scrap, plastic, paper, toys, etc. will go into the
other.

• Each floor has 2 small green dustbins and one large one. The dry waste from
both houses will go into the common large dustbin and the wet waste from

3 each house will go into their respective smaller green dustbins.

Process cont.

• There are two wheeled dustbins and two large blue drums in the society. One
of each must be labeled Dry and Wet. Cleaners will collect the respective

4 waste from each house based on the wheeled dustbins they are carrying.

• The labeled drums will hold the corresponding waste. The dry waste will be
sold to an NGO called Lets Recycle which will help generate revenue for 426
and which will also segregate the dry waste further and recycle it. The truck
5 will come every 2 days.

• The wet waste will be given away to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.

6
Process cont.

• The waste from the garden (leaves and dirt) will go into the wet waste
wheeled bin and will in turn be emptied into the huge green bin before the

7 wheeled bin is used to collect wet waste from the houses.

• Sanitary waste from each house like diapers, sanitary napkins, cotton buds,
etc. will also be put into the wet waste bin and will be given away to the

8 AMC.

• Waste found within the society will be emptied into the respective blue and
green dustbins within the complex.

Cost benefit analysis

COSTS

—  Dustbin costs (2 blue 2 green) = 4 X INR 2500 = INR

10000

BENEFITS

—  Revenue from disposed waste

—  Savings from reduced maintenance of dumped waste

—  Less pollution and hence better reputation for both 426

and Ahmedabad
Important notes

—  Lets Recycle will give money per kilogram

of waste provided it is recyclable
—  Cream and shampoo bottles must be
completely empty when thrown into the
dustbin but need not be rinsed.
—  Each apartment will be given 2 weeks of
leeway for not separating their waste or if
they have any questions. They may contact
me on 8849647707. After 2 weeks, the staff
in the society will NOT collect the waste
from those houses which do not separate
their waste.
