A-LEVEL MEDIA STUDIES
Cover Sheet Section B: Learner Statement of Aims and Intentions (approximately 500 words).
Explain the ways in which you will respond to the brief to create a cross-media production, applying your
knowledge and understanding of the theoretical framework. Use the questions below as a guide.

Use evidence from your research into: similar products; the industry context; your target
audience, as well as theoretical perspectives, to explain your decisions:
o How and why will you use media language in your cross-media production?
o How and why will you construct representations of individuals, groups and issues/events?
o How will you target your intended audience?
o How will your production conform to its industry context?
o How will your cross-media production demonstrate digital convergence?
In the music video, I will be using technical codes such as a variety of different shot types (close-ups,
long shots, tracking shots etc.) as well as experimenting with different lighting such as bright natural light,
darker natural light, and artificial lighting. For mise-en-scene, I will be using suitable outfits on my actors
for it to appear realistic for an indie genre video (therefore has synergy with a Catfish and the Bottlemen
video). Similarly, in my magazine I shall be using a variety of different camera shots, such as a direct
gaze close-up on the front cover and other types on the double page spread. I will also use synergy
between the music video and magazine with the use of outfits, making them the same or very similar.
In my research, I discovered that other Catfish and the Bottlemen videos included mostly love stories
(Cocoon for example) that don’t have a ‘fairy-tale’ ending. This was the inspiration for my video as it
makes sure my video will be fit for purpose, including male and female characters that have an equally
large, important role. The event it will target is the love story I previously mentioned.
The target audience for this task is 16-35 year olds who show a specific interest in the indie genre. To
target this, I will set out to use several stereotypes for the genre, such as the previously mentioned
outfits, as well as using predominantly natural lighting to provide connotations of the mood at that point. I
will also be using lip-syncing to capture the performance element, as well as allowing the audience to see
the artist perform, which is what a lot of new bands do, and what most indie music videos in general
include. In my magazine, I will use shots that may appeal to this audience, as well as including questions
that this audience may want to ask the band themselves, for it to appeal to that audience hypothetically.
My production will conform to its industry context by the inclusion of conventions that would be typical to
that of an indie genre. For example, even the font of my magazine will be suitable for an indie music
magazine for it to be realistic in a real-world scenario. Through research in the planning stage, I
discovered that most people expect to see the suitable outfit and overall mise-en-scene throughout the
video, which I then decided to conform to as I mentioned before, allowing it to be fit for purpose and to be
what’s expected in the video to appeal to its predominant audience base.
To demonstrate digital convergence, I will ensure that my magazine has some reference to the bands
social media handles. I will make sure these are put in discretely so they look like they’re meant to be
there and it’s done properly, as well as advertising the fact that they have a YouTube account etc.
