Venice is a city in northern Italy. It has been known as the “Queen of the Adriatic”, “City
of Bridges”, and “The City of Light”. The city stretches across 117 small islands in the marshy
Venetian Lagoon along the Adriatic Sea in northeast Italy.

Venice is world famous for its canals. It is built on an archipelago of 117 islands formed by
about 150 canals in a shallow lagoon. The islands on which the city is built are connected by
about 400 bridges. In the old centre, the canals serve the function of roads, and every form of
transport is on water or on foot.

You can ride gondola there. It is the classical Venetian boat which nowadays is mostly
used for tourists, or weddings, funerals, or other ceremonies. Now, most Venetians travel by
motorised waterbuses which ply regular routes along the major canals and between the city’s
islands. The city has many private boats. The only gondolas still in common use by Venetians
are the Traghetti, foot passenger ferries crossing the Grand Canal at certain points without
bridges.

Last autumn I was in India during Diwali, the “Festival of Lights” which takes place
every year to celebrate the victory of good over evil. This festival lasts for five days and is held
at the end of October or in the first week of November.
Preparations began weeks before the event. People cleaned their homes and painted
wonderful designs called rangolis on the walls and floors. They bought beautiful new clothes and
jewelry to wear during the festival. Women made delicious sweets which were better than any
others I have ever tasted.
During the five days of Diwali, every home and temple was decorated, inside and outside,
with lovely clay lamps and colourful candles. After dark, the whole neighbourhood glittered with
thousands of tiny lights, as though in a fairy tale. Excited children set off firecrackers, and at first
I was frightened by the loud bangs, but the spectacular display was so fascinating that I soon
joined in the spirit of celebration.
Diwali is a deeply moving festival. I am very grateful I had the chance to share in this
celebration of peace and harmony. I have fond memories of the experience, and in particular I
will never forget how friendly and generous people were.

My family likes spending time by the sea very much. When we had a holiday last year, we went to
a place at the seaside and borrowed a boat from one of our friends. Then we sailed and fished in the sea
all day. We also had races against other boats.

When the sea was rough, we sailed on a small lake near the sea instead. There were a lot of sharp
rocks, and the water was shallow, so we must be careful because we did not want to damage our
friend’s boat.

There were not many fish in the lake, but we caught a lot when we sailed to the sea. The fish were
not very big, but they tasted very good. We sailed to the land at lunch time, collected pieces of dry wood
and fried or grilled our fish at the beach. All of us enjoyed our meals. It was the most wonderful day for
my family.

E. HERMIT
F. Many years ago, there lived a hermit in a forest in Sumatra. He did not grow food but depended on the
jungle fruit to survive. Soon, there was a drought, and all the plants and fruit trees in the jungle died.
The old man had nothing to eat now, so he turned to become a beggar. He went to a nearby
village trying to get food. At first, the villagers were happy to help him. However, when he came
regularly, they refused to give him any more food. They told him to grow his own food.
One day, while the hermit was sitting in his hut, sad and hungry, he began to think about growing
his own food. Just then, a boatman stopped by and took a pity on the hermit. Then he gave him some
“paddy” seeds.
Before the boatman went away, he said, “These seeds will grow and give you everlasting harvest if
you work very hard. If you are tired of the work, the “paddy” plants will turn into weeds.”
The old hermit worked hard to clear the land and sowed the seeds before the rain came. Strangely,
after a short period of time, the “paddy” was ready for harvesting. The old man got a lot of rice from the
harvest. After each harvest, the plants grew again right away.
When the villagers heard about the hermit and his wonderful “paddy”, they flocked to his “paddy”
field and took home as much “paddy” as they could.
One day, being very tired of harvesting the paddy, he shouted, “Oh stop growing, you wretched
thing!” As soon as he had said this, the “paddy” plants turned into weeds.

and weak. He knocked at every door and asked for some food, but nobody cared about
him. Nobody wanted to help the little boy.
Finally, a generous woman helped him. She gave him shelter and a meal. When the boy

rice. She reminded him, please remember, if there is a flood you must save yourself.
Use this lesung; as a boat;. The lesung; was happy and thanked the old woman. The little

One of life impressive phenomenon and often we meet is rainbow. The rainbow phenomenon often
happens after the rain stops. In the sky, the rainbow appears to be an arc w light with the ends leading to
the horizon at light rain. A rainbow is not an object, it cannot be approached or physically touched.
Rainbow consists of a big arc spectrum and happens because of the refraction of the sunlight by the water
droplets. A rainbow is in fact a full circle of light. However, due to most people viewing a rainbow on the
ground they only see a semi-circle or arc of the rainbow.

The light of the sun is polychromatic light (consisting of many colours). The color of white light of the
sun actually is a combination of various lights with different long wave. When the sunlight passes through
the water droplets, such as when it was refracted through a prism of glass, it is deflected into the center of
the water droplets. They are separated dan changed into spectrum colors. They are red, orange, yellow,
green, blue, indigo, and purple. The separated colors are then reflected from the farthest side on the
droplets of water, again and again out of the water droplets. Then, the light turns into curve and now we
can see and call it as rainbow.

36. Why does a rainbow look like an arc? Because .....

A. We see it on the ground.

B. We see it when the rain falls.

C. It happens in the sky.

D. It happens after the rain stops.

Rafflesia can be found in the forests of Malaysia, Southern Thailand, Sumatra and Java. But,
Rafflesia flowers are fairly hard to locate. It is especially difficult to see them in bloom. Its buds
take up to 10 months to develop while its blossom lasts for just a few days.

Rafflesia has brownish, scale like leaves and fleshy, smelling flowers of various sizes, from few
inches to meter big in diameter. We usually notice its large fleshy flowers. There is a deep well
in the centre of the flowers. The sexual organs are located beneath the rim of the disk. Male and
female flowers are separate.

The reddish brown colors of the petals, sprinkled with white freckles produce unpleasant stench,
similar to rotting flesh. This would attract flies and insects which help disperse the seeds.
Rafflesia is parasite, which means it takes the nutrient out of its host.

37. What is the unpleasant smell for?

A. People repellent
B. Attracting insects
C. Attracting host
D. Protection

Sand storms

Sand stormsare spectacular to look at but devastating to be in. Dust or sand storms have
always bedeviled desert travelers who may become lost in them or even smothered by the
sand they deposit. Sand storms occur when a strong wind whips up soil and sand particles
into the atmosphere and carry them away. Sand storms can be so large that they are visible
from space. Each year forty million tons of dust are carried from the Sahara to the Amazon
basin. The carrying away of top soil can destroy agriculture or deposit necessary minerals. A
wall of dust billowing out of the desert is one of the great images of the power of nature.

39. What is the passage about?

A. The danger of sand storm.
B. The benefit of sand storm for human.
C. Sand storms are horrible natural disaster.
D. Sand storms can be so large and invisible from space.

Whales are the largest animals on the earth. Bigger than elephants, they may grow 95 feet long,
and weigh 150 tons. A baby blue whale, just born, can be 23 feet long and weigh 3 tons.

Although whales live in the oceans and swim like fish, they are not fish. They are mammals, like
cows and elephants. Unlike fish they bear young alive, not as eggs. Their babies live on their mother’s
milk. They breathe through their lungs and hold their breath when they go under water. If they cannot
come to the surface to breathe fresh air, they will drown. They are warm blooded. Fish, however, lay
eggs, breathe oxygen in the water, and are cold-blooded.

Whales life in all-the ocean, in the winter some of them go to warm waters to breed and in the
summer most of them go to cold waters to feed. There are to kinds of whales, whales with teeth (tooted
whales) and whales without teeth (baleen whales). The toothed whales eat fish and squid, which they can
catch with their teeth, although they swallow their food without chewing it. The baleen whales eat
plankton (small sea animals and plants). When they find plankton, they open their mouth and swallow the
plankton.

Whales have few enemies. Only human and killer whale attack whales. And whales do not seem to
fight among themselves. They usually live from 20 to 30 years.

40. Whales occasionally live in warm waters…

a. To get more foods

b. For production

c. For fresh air

d. To avoid winter

For many years people believed that the cleverest animals after man were the chimpanzees. Now,
however, there is a proof that dolphins may be even cleverer than these big apes.

Although a dolphin lives in the sea, it is not a fish. It is a mammal. It is in many ways, therefore,
like a human being.

Dolphins have a simple language. They are able to talk to one another. It may be possible for
man to learn how to talk to dolphins. But, this will not be easy because dolphins cannot hear the
kind of sounds man can make. If man wants to talk to dolphins, therefore, he will have to make a
third language which both he and the dolphins can understand.

Dolphins are also very friendly toward man. They often follow ships. There are many stories
about dolphins guiding ships through difficult and dangerous waters.

41. Why talking to dolphin is not easy?

a. dolphins can not hear the kind of man sounds

b. dolphins like playing with man

c. dolphins feel annoyed by man

d. dolphins think as human

Spiders are not insects. They are arachnids. Arachnids have four pairs of legs but only two body
parts. Insects have three pairs of legs and three body parts. Spiders have two to four pairs of eyes. They
can see extremely well.
Spiders eat small insects such as flies and mosquitoes, and sometime bit people. When a spider
bites insect, it does not kill the insect immediately. Instead a special poison passes through its fangs, and
this poison paralyzed the body to the unlucky insects.

Most spiders make their own homes. They do this with a special substance produced by their
bodies. In the corner of some rooms it is possible to find a spider’s web where the spider is waiting for its
next dinner guest.

42. The statement that is TRUE according to the text is…

a. Spiders are special insects that have three pair of legs

b. Arachnids have three pairs of legs and two body parts

c. Spiders are not insects but arachnids that can see quite well

d. Spiders do not like other small insects as their food

On my birthday, last month, my mother gave me a small beautiful ring. It is made of white gold. I
was happy. But a week later I was very sad. When I was working in the kitchen. I lost my ring. I looked
for it everywhere but I couldn’t find it.

That evening, my daddy was eating some fish soup. “Who made the soup?” he asked.

“ I made it, Dad”. I liked cooking very much.

“Are there any …?” my Daddy started to ask. While taking a spoonful of fish soup and put in this
mouth, then he stopped suddenly. He opened his mouth and took a ring out. “Where did this come
from?” he asked. “This is a strange type of fish”.

I was delighted, “my ring” I shouted. “I am sorry, Dad, you had a surprise,” I said. “But thank you
very much for finding my ring.” Then I took it to the kitchen and washed it. Fortunately my Dad didn’t

I was the last person to get on the plane. I found my seat and discovered that Iwas sitting next to a

Almost immediately, the captain spoke to us in a very calm voice,”Ladies and gentlemen .This is your
captain speaking. We are having a slight technical problem with one of our engines. There is absolutely no
need to panic. We will have to return to the air port. Please remain seated and keep your seat belts
fastened.”

Well, you can imagine how frightened I was,but the crewswere fantastic. The flight attendants were
really calm and told us not to worry. One of them told me torelax and said that evrything would be all
right.

A few minutes later,we were coming in to land. The pilot made a perfect landingon the run way. It was
over.We were safe.

That day, I decided not to fly again. I caught another taxi and went home. Butas I closed the front
