Dance Music Research

Modern day dance music, listened to in clubs & bars across the UK & USA particularly,
started developing in the early 1980s in the form of Electronic dance music. Disco music
from the 1970’s became influenced by computerization, changing dance music forever.
Now, nearly all dance music whether it’s house, techno or electronic use computerized
techniques to compose each track. Due to nightclubs & raves commonly being the biggest
players of dance music, electronic dance music in particular tends to appeal to young adults.
Dance music can also be seen to still be on the rise, with there being a supposable 16%
electronic dance music interest growth in 2018 alone, & Spotify commanding 16 billion
streams for just dance music. Furthermore, Dance music is seen to appeal fairly equally to
both genders, statistics showing 49% of electronic dance music listeners are female.

Lucas’s new EP “Eastside” falls within the genre of House Dance music. I aim to reflect Lucas
through the upbeat music, representing her to her audience as a thrill seeking, cheerful
young adult living her life. Dance music as a genre will aim to reflect both Lucas’s image as
an artist & as an ordinary young person, hopefully building a more personal connection
between the artist & her target audience. Big music industry artists such as Dua Lipa will
inspire how I want to portray Lucas, as well as where I picture Lucas fitting within the music
industry. Dua, likewise to Lucas, appeals to a young adult audience of both genders. I aim to
not only take inspiration from Dua’s music, but also from her media platforms. Dua Lipa’s
social medias & website are current in style, & I believe replicating this will present the
current genre of music Lucas produces as well as appealing to her media literate audience
who are likely to seek keeping on top of trends themselves, hence wanting their music
choices to reflect this.
