The Undergraduate Modular System at the University of Hull -

Key Features

Teaching takes place in 2 semesters of 12 weeks each, with additional assessment periods at the
end of each semester.

Teaching is done in modules, each of which has a credit value assigned, to indicate the amount of
learning associated with the module.

One credit is equivalent to 10 hours learning time (including lectures, tutorials, labs, private study,
revision, assessments, etc.)

An undergraduate degree consists of 360 credits.

An undergraduate degree is split into 3 stages - Certificate, Diploma and Final stages (equivalent
to the 3 years of a full time degree), each of 120 credits.

There are 2 exam boards:

 The Module Board fixes the mark for the module on the 0-100 scale. Marks may not be
changed after this board has “frozen” the mark.

 The Programme Board makes decisions regarding progression, awards, and classification.

The pass mark for each module is 40.

In order to progress to the next stage of the degree, a student must pass all 120 credits

Exceptions

 Failed modules may be resat on one occasion (normally in September), provided the student
has satisfied attendance and coursework requirements.

 Modules with marks in the 35-39 range may, subject to certain conditions and limits, be
compensated, and treated as if passed.

 Failed modules, up to certain limits, may be referred, and taken again the following year,
alongside the next year’s modules.

 At the Final stage only, and up to certain limits (20 credits only), fails may be disregarded
(condoned).

Compensation is a right. Referral and condonement are subject to the decision of the Board of
Examiners.
