MANUFACTURING

Course Outcomes: Through this course students should be able to

• Identify various stages of automation like NC, CNC and DNC and their characteristics

• Apply the knowledge to write a part program for any component in manual and computer
assisted part programming

• Describe the tool geometry, automatic tool changer, holding, clamping and holding
devices in CNC machining.

Unit I
Introduction to CAM : Introduction to manufacturing system, Basic components of
NC and its applications, Computer numerical control, Direct numerical control,
Adaptive control machining systems, Material handling systems, Introduction to robot
technology, Robot application
Unit II
Introduction to NC and CNC programming : NC part programming, Manual part
programming, Computer assisted part programming, APT language and manual data
input, Fundamentals of data communication, Canned cycles and cutter radius
compensation
Unit III
CNC tooling and fixturing : Turning tool geometry, Tool presetting, Automatic tool
changers, Jigs and fixtures, Location and its principle, Fixturing for NC machining,
Work holding devices, Errors due to location clamping and machining
Unit IV
Introduction to Non-traditional machining processes : Classifications of
material removal processes, Need for non-conventional or non-traditional processes,
Characteristics of non-traditional material removal (machining) processes, Chemical
and Photo-chemical machining, Electrochemical machining, Electrochemical grinding
Unit V
Non traditional machining processes (Mechanical) : Ultrasonic machining,
Abrasive jet machining, Water jet machining, Abrasive water jet machining
Unit VI
Non traditional machining processes (Thermal) : Electric discharge machining,
Laser beam machining, Electron beam machining-thermal and non-thermal, Plasma
machining, Thermal spraying processes-combustion (Detonation gun process) and
electrical (plasma spraying), Rapid prototyping
