Quiz 2 (Take Home)

Due: November 5, 2018 (Soft Copy, send to jun613@gmail,com); November 8, 2018 (Hard Copy)

1. Determine the response (displacement, velocity, acceleration) for the SDOF with
parameters:

m = 0.25 kip-sec2/in ; k = 10 kips/in ; 

due to the force function given by: p(t) = A sin t (kips) acting within the duration:
0 < t < 12 sec
where
A = 0.7 + RN*0.3 round to 0.01
 RN*0.4 round to 0.01

RN = random Number = to last 3 digits of your Student Number read backward multiplied by
0.001. (Ex. If your SN = 2016-12345, then RN = 0.543)

Use the following methods:

a. Piecewise linear interpolation

b. Central difference
c. Newmark’s Method, Average acceleration
d. Newmark’s Method, Linear acceleration

Plot the results for each response up to 20 sec, superimposing the results of the 4 methods
and the theoretically exact solution. Use a time increment of 0.1 sec.

2. Construct the tripartite response spectrum due to the time-history (ground acceleration vs.
time) loading given in the attached Excel file. (Your time history is based on the column with
your name). Assume the mass of the SDOF system is 0.25 kips-sec2/in, and a damping ratio
of 5%. The stiffness will be a variable for the different SDOF defined by their periods. Use
any of the 4 methods in Problem #1 to determine spectral displacements, velocities and
acceleration. (The output will be similar to the chart of Figure 6.8.1 of Chopra). Note: You do
not have to submit hard copy of all the computer output, just a hard copy of the summary
of results and a soft copy (excel, matlab, etc) of your solution.

3. Construct the normalized response spectrum of Problem No. 2 (similar to Fig 6.8.2)

4. Construct the elastic design spectrum (mean plus one standard deviation or 84.1th
percentile) for ground motion with PGA = 1g, PGV = 48in/sec, and PGD = 36 in. (similar to
Fig.6.9.4)
