Cinema in Revolutionary Ireland.

In Ireland in the revolutionary period cinema was the latest form of mass entertainment. Previously ignored by the British authorities and by their nationalist
opponents, its propaganda potential was quickly recognised; in 1916 the British government sponsored the production of the documentary, The Battle of the
Somme, which played in cinemas across Ireland; in 1917, within hours of the event, the Bohemian Cinema in Phibsborough, Dublin screened footage of Thomas
Ashe’s funeral.

The Curious History of Irish Dogs

The Year of the Dog offers a great opportunity to reflect on the role of ‘man’s best friend’ in Irish society, and in Chinese society. At this special event, writer of
The Curious History of Irish Dogs David Blake Knox will shed light on the nine breeds of dog native to Ireland and the unique roles that each have played in Irish
history. Blake Knox will be joined by Dublin based Chinese artist Angela Wang, who will create live illustrations inspired by the talk.
Guided tour of the Yeats exhibition

Join us for a free tour of the exhibition Yeats: The Life and Works of William Butler Yeats on the first Thursday of each month. The tour introduces William Butler
Yeats (1865-1939) - one of the great poets of the twentieth century - and his many interests, including literature, folklore, theatre, politics, the occult, and Irish
cultural identity. After the tour, you can listen to a selection of voices speaking some of his best loved poems, including Easter 1916.
This public tour will also take place on the following Thursdays: 5 April, 10 May, 14 June.

Getting started with Genealogy research

Places in the workshops are limited and will be granted on a first come first served basis.

Accredited Genealogists Ireland (AGI) in association with the NLI present a series of genealogy lectures and afternoon workshops for Aontas Adult Learners’
festival. The talks and workshops will take place on Monday 5 March and on Friday 9 March.
Professional genealogists and members of AGI will give three short introductory genealogy lectures followed by small group workshops to help you get started or
to progress your family history research.

International Women’s Day Lecture

area in the 20th century. From big-name stars like Maureen O’Hara and Maeve Brennan to Dr Kathleen Lynn and lesser known figures, find out more about the
women that called this part of Dublin home.

Guided tour of the National Library

Join us to explore the Library's rich architectural history and heritage. The tour begins in the main hall of the Library and includes a visit to the Library's iconic
reading room.
This tour will take place on the second Saturday of each month: 14 April, 12 May, 9 June, 14 July, 11 August, 8 September, 13 October, 10 November and 8
December.

the various collections and interpreting the sources. The workshop is suitable for those who are using the library for the first time.

Pilgrims and poets in fifteenth-century Gaelic Ireland

Irish Texts Society Breandán Ó Buachalla Memorial Lecture, given by Dr Bernadette Cunningham, Deputy Librarian, Royal Irish Academy Library
Breandán Ó Buachalla (1936-2010) was a long-time member of the ITS Council and an authority on Gaelic poetry. The annual memorial lecture is held in the
National Library of Ireland each year.
