I CONDITIONAL SENTENCES

TYPE 1

IF + PRESENT .............................WILL + INFINITIVE


1. EXAMPLE: If you eat those sweets, you will feel ill.

2. IF + PRESENT................................CAN / MUST.
If the weather is nice, we can play tennis tomorrow.

3. IF + PRESENT................................ IMPERATIVE.
If you need money, tell me.

4. IF + PRESENT................................PRESENT (POCO FRECUENTE)


You have fun if you watch TV.

5. UNLESS = IF… NOT.


If you do not phone me, I will come tomorrow.
Unless you phone me, I will come tomorrow.

6. Se emplean AS SOON AS, WHEN ,UNTIL, BY THE TIME, AS LONG AS, AFTER, THE
MOMENT THAT en vez de IF.
I will lend you my car as long as you are careful with it.

TYPE 2

IF + PAST .............................WOULD + INFINITIVE


1. EXAMPLE: If I had a lot of money, I would travel around the world.(Si tuviera mucho dinero,
viajaría alrededor del mundo.)
Se emplea para referirse a acciones presentes o futuras irreales o hipotéticas. Cuando
imaginamos una situación opuesta a la realidad.

2. Se suele emplear were para la 1ª, 2ª,3ª persona en la clausula del if, excepto en If I were you
If I were here, I would travel around the world.

3. IF +PAST……………………………….MIGHT/COULD +INFINITIVE.
MIGHT = podría, sería capaz de
COULD = quizás lo hiciera
If I had money, I could buy a car.

TYPE 3

IF + PAST PERFECT...WOULD + HAVE + PAST PARTICIPLE


1. EXAMPLE: If I had studied, I would have passed. (Si hubiera estudiado, habría aprobado).
Se utiliza para referirnos a acciones pasadas que no se realizaron y no se realizarán.

2. IF +PAST PERFECT…………….MIGHT/COULD+HAVE+ PAST PARTICIPLE.


If I had applied for the job, he might have got it.
