Squaring any 2 Digit Number

CASE-I: From 12 to 19

12 x12 = 12+2 2x2 = 144

13 x 13 = 13+3 3x3 = 169

1
14 x 14 = (14 +4) (4x4 )= 18 6 = 196 and so on.

What I have done here is so simple:

Step-1: To find 19 x 19 , multiply 9 x 9= 8 1 ; then carry over 8 to

19+9=28

i.e 28 + 8 = 36.

Step-2: Thus 19x19=3 6 1

CASE-II: Square of any two digit number ending with 5.

15x15= 2 2 5 ; 25x25=6 25 ; 35x35=12 25 45x45=20 25 and so on.

This method is well-known to all . In this case the last two digits are
always 25
To get the first part we need to multiply the digit in the ten’s place
by the
successor of it.

After doing practice for 20 minutes you will be able to find the
square of any
number from 12 to 19 mentally.
This method can be generalized to the numbers of higher digits
whose last digit
is 5.
CASE-III: Squaring any two digit number ending with 6.

For this we should know the method in case-II.

With some examples I will explain the method.
26x26=252 + 25+26=625+51 = 676
36x36=352 +35+36 =1225+71=1296
……………………………………
96x96=9025+95+96=9216 etc.

(1)
In the first chapter we have learned “How to square any two digit
number ending with 5 or 6. Also now we can mentally find the square of
the numbers 12,13,14,15,16,17,18 and 19.

Now we are going to learn How to find the square of any two digit
numbers which are not included in Chapter-1

Squaring a 2 Digit Number: Let us take 47

 The nearest 10 to 47 is 50
 So 47→ 50
 Also we have to decrease 47 by 3 to get 44
 Now mentally multiply 44x50
 It can be done this way 44x10=440
 Double it mentally to 880
 Double it again mentally to 1760
 Then add 440 to get 2200
 This 2200 is the FIRST part of the answer.
 47 is "3" away from the 50
 Squaring this "3" we get 3x3=9 which is the SECOND part of the
answer.
 Finally adding the two parts we get 2200+9=2209.
 Thus, 47x47=2209

With practice this can easily be done in our mind.

CONCLUSION: Now I hope that you will be fluent in squaring any

two digit number with the help of these ‘TIPS’. Just a little bit of
practice is required.

MULTIPLYING ANY NUMBER BY 4 , 5 , 9 , 11 , 12 , 13

Multiply By 4

To quickly multiply by four, double the number and then double it again
which can be done in our head

Multiply By 5

To quickly multiply by 5, divide the number in two and then multiply it

by 10. This can be done mentally

For example:
46824 x 5 = ?

Let us divide 46824 by 2 mentally the quotient is 23412

Now the product is 23412 x 10 = 234120.Within very short time the
answer can be
found.
Dear students practice this with some other numbers . You will enjoy it.

Multiply by 11 :

Any two digit number:

. 23x11= 2___ 3 . As 2+3=5; so 23x11=253

. 64x11= 6___ 4. Now 6+4=10 where 1 need to carry over to ten’s place
i.e to
obtain
6+1=7 and 0 need to be written in the blank. Thus we get, 64x11=704
etc.

Any number x 11:

2345 x 11=? To get the product keep the ending digit

‘5’ as it is. Then add 4+5=9, 3+4=7, 2+3=5 atlast 0+2=2
Thus, 2345 x 11 = 25795. One ‘0’ should be assumed to the
extreme left of
the number to be multiplied.

Any number by 12: Multiply by 10 and add twice the original number.
For ex. 1237 x 12 =12370 + 2474=14844etc.

Multiply by 13: Multiply by 3 and add 10 times original number.

********************************
Multiply any number from 12 to 19:

* 12x13= ?
Just consider 13 and 2.
Now 13 +2=15 .
Add 3 x 2=6 which is the ending digit of the required
product.
Hence, 12 x 13 = 156.

(3)

 16 x 18 =?
 Consider 18 and 6 , always the bigger number and the digit from
the unit’s place of the smaller number should be considered.
 18+6=24 and 6 x 8 = 4 8 .
 Thus 8 is the ending digit and 4 need to carry over to 24 to get 24
+ 4=28
 Therefore, 16 x 18 = 288.
Do practice taking some other pair of numbers between 12 to 19 after
that you will be able to do these in your head.

SQUARING 3-DIGIT NUMBERS WHOSE LAST DIGIT IS 5 OR 6”

Now, using the above TIPS we can find the square of 3-digit numbers
also whose ending digit is 5 or 6. Let us take the following examples:

NUMBERS WITH ENDING DIGIT 5:

115 X 115 = (12x11) 25 = (131) 25 = 13125

125 x 125 = (13x12) 25 = (156) 25 = 15625 etc.

Now we know how to multiply any two digit numbers mentally so we

can use it in
the above situations then our calculation will be more simple.

……………… ……………

***Dividing by 5***

Dividing a large number by five is actually very simple. All you do is

multiply by 2 and move the decimal point:

195 ÷ 5 =?

Step1: 195 x 2 = 390

Step2: Move the decimal: 39.0 or just 39
2978 ÷ 5 =?

step 1: 2978 x 2 = 5956

Step2: 595.6

DIGIT SUM METHOD

Now I am going to introduce the magical method known as “Digit Sum

Method” which will help the students a lot. Let us start.

Q. Find the digit sum of the numbers (a) 2435672 (b) 45921

(a) Soln . 2435672

Now, 2+4+3+5+6+7+2= 29
2+9=11, 1+1=2
So, the digit sum of the given number is 2.
But to get the digit sum quickly we can casting out nines or the digits
whose sum is
nine then also we will get the same Digit Sum.

Here, 2 4 3 5 6 72 we can remove 4,5 ( 4+5=9); 3,6 (3+6=9) and

7,2 (7+2=9)
Finally we are left with only 2 in the given number , so the digit sum is
2 we have
got very quickly.

Now this method we are going to aplly to check if their any mistake in
any
arithmetical calculation. Already I discussed the method in Math.
Activity class.
Now here You will get the procedures . Let me put some examples at
first.

Ex.1. 2456 + 345432 + 7291 + 81721 = 146900

Let us Check is the sum correct
8 =
Digit sum of 2456 is 2+4+5+6=17 → 1+7
3
Digit sum of 345432 is 3+4+5+4+3+2 = 21→2+1=

Digit sum 7291 is 7+2+9+1 = 19 → 1+ 9 = 10→1+0=

1

Or we can get directly also just casting out nines for ex. In 7291; 7+2=9
so reject
7 and 2. Also you can reject 9 then we are left with only the digit 1
hence the digit
sum is 1 which will save our time.

Again the digit sum of 817211is

Now the sum of all the digits in the boxes is 8+3+1+1→ 4.

Finally the digit sum of our original sum 146900 is 4+6 = 10→1
which is not
equal to 4. So we are hundred percent sure that our addition is
wrong.
This can be applied to check division, multiplication, addition and
subtraction etc.
In the class I will explain the remaining part.

Likewise to get the units of capacity and weight we should take
