CHAPTER 4

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents summary, findings of the study, conclusions, and

recommendations.

Summary

The main purpose of this study was to find the effects of Assessment For

Learning towards Mathematics performance of the Grade Seven students of Pooc

National High School especially in Statistics, which was one of the Mathematics

fields to be taken in the fourth quarter of S.Y. 2013 – 2014.

Specifically, the study answered the following questions:

1. What is the students’ pretest and posttest performance in Statistics in phase

1 and phase 2:

1.1 in the control group; and

1.2 In the experimental group?

2. Is there a significant mean gain from the pretest to the posttest performance

in Statistics of the experimental and control groups in phase 1 and phase 2?

3. Is there a significant difference in mean gains between the control and

experimental groups in phase 1 and phase 2?

4. What intervention can be used to improve students’ performance in

Statistics?
33

The study also tested the following hypotheses:

Ho1: There is no significant difference between the hypothetical mean and actual

mean of:

1.1 the experimental group

1.2 the control group

Ho2: There is no significant mean gain difference from the pretest to the posttest

performance in statistics of the experimental and control groups.

Ho3: There is no significant difference in mean gains between the experimental

and control groups.

Findings of the Study

1) The students’ pretest performance in Mathematics of the control group and

experimental group was Below average Average for both phases. This was

considered below average in comparison to the school’s passing percentage set

at 75% of the total score of an exam or test. In this case, the respondents got a

score lower than the 75% of the total pretest score for both phases.

2) The students in the control group performed Below Average in the posttest for

both phases while the students’ in the experimental group performed Above

Average in the posttest for both phases.

3) There was a significant difference in the mean gain from the pretest to the

posttest performance for both experimental and control groups. Both groups

performed better in their posttests compared to their pretest. However, the

experimental group performed better than the control group.

4) There was a significant difference between the mean gain scores between the

control group and experimental group for both phases. AFL intervention helped

in the improvement of students’ academic performance in both phases.

Conclusion

Assessment plays a vital role in the learning of students. As seen on the study

that was conducted, assessment helped students perform better in Statistics.

Assessment for Learning, based on the findings of the study, helped in improving the

performance of the students in Math, specifically in Statistics.

It also showed that grouping did not matter in the implementation of AFL in

the teaching-learning process. As shown in both phases of the study, all four

sections underwent the AFL intervention in different phases and yielded the same

result which was the improvement in the performance in Statistics. Both the

experimental and control group performed better in their posttest compared to

their pretest, however, the experimental group performed better than the control

group.

Recommendations

Based on the results and conclusions, the following actions are

recommended.

1) Since AFL intervention had influenced the improvement of student

performance, teachers should include this intervention in their classes.

35

2) Teachers should set learning goals and success criteria at the start of their

lesson so students may be guided with what they are to learn.

3) Teachers should give feedback to their students about every activity they are

doing as well as their progress in terms of the learning goals and success

criteria.

4) Students should be encouraged to assess themselves and to ask questions or

inquiries regarding the lessons or topics that they find confusing.

5) Further studies which consider other subject areas, aside from Mathematics,

are also recommended.

6) Related studies in terms of longer time frame is also recommended

7) Administration of the said school should take into consideration the

application of the AFL intervention in the class as one strategy to improve

students’ academic performance.

8) It is also recommended that further studies be conducted which would

compare AFL intervention with other types of assessment like assessment as

learning and assessment of learning.
