Q1. Empowerment is certainly not the only HR intervention strategy that Mr. Mahalingam can think
of. Some other strategies that can be adopted in this process of change (reorganization) are:

1. Transformation of managers – The skills of the managers have to be increased and made
more effective so that they can effectively convey the changes to the employees. This will
help the managers in having meaningful career conversations with the employees and
knowing their technical inclination and skill set.
2. Dissemination of information to the employees regarding the change – The employees
should be made well aware of the changes occurring as this will help them in making their
career plans which gives certainty to their future. This ultimately helps the employees to be
proactive, increase their confidence and productivity.
3. Availability of skill set data to the HR managers – This will include the resumes of the
employees containing their skill set which will help the HR managers to find people with
required technical and domain knowledge so that they can be put in the projects which match
their expertise.
4. Employee satisfaction – This can be taken care of by providing certain added advantages to
the employees like flexible working hours, rewards and recognition, work from home,
recreational facilities, food marts inside the company campus etc. All this things provide
sense of belongingness to the employee and helps in their retention.

Q2. Besides hiring MBA’s some other strategies that Mr. Mahalingam should take to convert TCS
into a marketing driven firm are:

1. Focus on core competencies – TCS should focus on their core competency which will enable
them to be different from their competitors. The core competency is not easily copied by the
competitors thus giving the firm an advantage.
2. Value delivery to customers – TCS should develop a product offering which is of value to
the customer. One way can be to make this offering cost effective.
3. Innovation – TCS should invest in research and development which would help them in
making some new and innovative products according to the customer’s needs and wants
which are ever changing.
4. Strategic Alliances – TCS should go for certain alliances with some big players of the IT
market like Oracle, Microsoft etc. to produce new offerings. This will lend more credibility to
their new products in the market.
