Adopt A Student Lesson

Objectives

- The student will demonstrate correct playing position and posture.

- The student will demonstrate how to correctly assemble and disassemble the bassoon.

- The student will demonstrate a correct bassoon embouchure.

- The student will demonstrate a crow on the reed.

- The student will demonstrate a one octave F major scale.

Materials

- Bassoon

- Bassoon reed

- Bassoon fingering chart

Procedures

- The student will open the bassoon case on the floor.

- The student will remove the seat strap and place it on the chair.

- The student will remove the boot and anchor it on the ground.

- The student will remove the wing joint and connect it to the boot (smaller hole).
- The student will remove the bass joint and connect it to the boot.

• Must make sure that the pieces fit together correctly and are fully pushed in.

• Unlock the lock on the bass joint, fit into the wing joint, re-lock.
- The student will remove and attach the bell.

• Watch joint key


- The student will remove the bocal.

- The student will place the bassoon carefully into the open case.

- The student will soak the reed in warm water.

- The student will put reed all the way into mouth (up to the winding) and crow.

- The student will form a natural embouchure around the reed.

• Teacher will adjust from this position if needed.


- Place the tip of the reed in the center of the lower lip

- Roll lip in slightly

- Cushion and encircle the reed gently with lips

- The student will place the reed on the bocal.

• The reed goes all the way onto the bocal


- The student will form the embouchure and blow into the reed/bocal.

- The student will attach the bocal to the wing joint.

- The student will attach the bassoon to the seat strap and adjust so that the reed rests on the

lower lip.

• It is important that the student sit first with correct posture, and then adjust to bring the

instrument to the body, not the body to the instrument.


- The student will place the left hand with fingers over the top three keys/holes, and the right

hand with fingers over the bottom three keys/holes.

- The student will form the embouchure and attempt to blow into the bassoon.

- The student will use the fingering chart and assistance from the teacher to finger and play an F.

- The student will use the fingering chart and assistance from the teacher to finger and play a G.

- The student will practice going from and F to G until comfortable.

- The student will repeat the above process until reaching the top of the F major scale.

- The student will remove the bassoon from the seat strap and place on the floor (standing up).

- The student will remove the reed and place in reed case.

- The student will remove the bocal and place in the case.

- The student will remove the bell and place in the case.

- The student will unlock the bass and wing joints.

- The student will remove the bass joint and place in the case.

- The student will remove the wing and place in the case.

- The student will place the boot in the case.

- The student will place the seat strap in the case.

Assessment

- The teacher will assess the student’s ability to demonstrate correct playing posture and

position by looking at the student’s posture and position from all angles.

- The teacher will assess the student’s ability to assemble and disassemble the bassoon by

watching the student assemble and disassemble the bassoon.


- The teacher will assess the student’s ability to form a correct embouchure by first asking the

student to form a natural embouchure and then observing what needs to change.

- The teacher will assess the student’s ability to crow by listening to the student crow.

- The teacher will assess the student’s ability to demonstrate a one octave F major scale by

listening to the student play and observing the student’s fingerings.
