ARNIS

- an indigenous Filipino martial art which utilizes various equipment such as stick and bladed
weapons and even empty hand fighting techniques.
- A Filipino martial art that can be performed individually or with a partner, using a single stick or
a pair of sticks for striking and blocking, it may also use for self-defense.

History:
- Arnis was called KALI during the Spanish colonization and the techniques of the art is focused on
bladed weapon fighting.
- April 27, 1521 was the first recorded used of kali against foreign invaders.
- December 11, 2009 by virtue of RA9850 signed by former president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo,
arnis was officially declared as the Philippine Martial Art and Sport

Fundamental Skills in Arnis:


 Grip – to hold the stick/cane properly
 Stances – it plays an important role in offensive and defensive movement of full contact
(labanan) and in the movement of formation (anyo)
 Striking – the way of using sticks or cane to hit opponent in the different parts of the body
 Blocking – intercepting the opponents’ strike of thrust using cane. It can be executed in moving
or stationary position.
 Parrying – it is the guarding position of the player through the use of freehand to support the
movement upon executing an offense or defense.

Types of Grip or Holding the Stick/s


a. Extended grip or hawak punyo – 1-2 inches allowance from the base
