As you complete your 40 hours of service, work on the following assignments:

1. Write a description (minimum 2 paragraphs) of what you did for community

service. What kinds of tasks did you perform and whom did you work with?

a. community service, I volunteered at Cedars-Sinai Medical Hospital.

At this hospital, my volunteer services ranged from aiding patients in

simple needs by working at the nursing station, and clerical work

involving delivering flowers to patients from family. The volunteering

services allowed my to understand perspectives of environments in the

medical field.

In clerical work, I was able to send flowers ordered by patients family

members. Doing so I was able to understand and look into the non-

medical part of volunteering at a hospital. However, I also did the

clinical section at the hospital. This involved patient care and

shadowing nurses with more extensive patient care.

2. Write a one page reflection about your experience, positive and negative, and

what you learned about yourself, others and health services available while

completing your community service. Would you like working here? What job

would you want if you worked here?

a. Beginning my Job Shadowing at Cedar’s- Sinai Medical Hospital, I

was exposed to new and different things. New and different things

involve a majority of tasks, assignments and even people. My first day

was a little confusing. Prior to my first day, I attended an orientation ,

however, I was really sleepy due to waking up at 5am at Anaheim,

California from a Health Occupations Students of America

conference. So, needless to say, I was tired. I did not remember most

of what was required for the first day. So, while confused, I managed

to understand that I had two different shifts, one clerical and one

clinical. My first shift (Clerical) involved delivering flowers to patients

from their family members. I learned how to connect with patients

and specifics in terms of word use such as to a patient never say

“Have a Nice Day” because you never know what could happen. As

well, I did clinical. This entailed more of the job shadowing. The job

shadowing mainly revolved around shadowing simple care for

patients such as knowing their charts and knowing what they can pr

can’t eat. With this volunteering I was able to find out more about my

passion. The surrounding area is wonderful, the cafeteria food is

wonderful, and it is an area that I would see myself working in. I hope

to one day be in the same environment wherever that may be.

3. What kinds of services are offered by the site?

a. Volunteering Service and Health Care Services

4. Make a list of the types and uses of technology in this health care setting.

a. Advanced Surgical Technology including lasers, x-rays, MRI’s, CT

Scans, Heart/ Blood/ Pulse Monitors, specialization labs, Scrub Rooms

with automatic disinfecting stations.

5. What is a sterile field? List the principles of sterile technique. In what areas of

the site are sterile techniques utilized?

a. A Sterile field is any areas, such as an OR room that is disinfected

with any and all kinds of bacteria, airborne or physical such as hands

or sicknesses. A sterile environment usually has sterile tools, such as

masks, clean tools, and eye protections

6. What is OSHA and what OSHA guidelines apply to this site?

a. OSHA is The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is an

agency of the United States Department of Labor. OSHA was and is

put in to assure safe and healthful working conditions for working

men and women by setting and enforcing standards and by providing

training, outreach, education and assistance. This site is able to do this

by having sanitation stations as well as bathrooms for hand washing

and “toxic waste” dispensing bins. This site is a hospital which means

if any site should have and enforce these guidelines, it’s here.
