Unit I: Communication system : block diagram transmitter, channel and receiver, baseband and
passband signals and their representation, need of modulation, types.

Amplitude modulation transmission and reception: AM and spectral interpretation, BW and


power requirement, DSB-SC, SSB, VSB, method of generation, coherent detection, envelope
detector.

Unit II: Angle modulation transmission and reception Types of angle modulation, NBFM,
WBFM, BW, power requirement and efficiency, FM generation (direct and indirect), FM
demodulation, FDM.

Unit III :Radio transmitters and receivers: Low and high level AM transmitter, superhetrodyne
receiver, FM Receiver, threshold effect in FM, Pre emphasis and de emphasis, Noise:
Classification of noise, sources of noise.

Unit IV: Baseband Digital modulation : Sampling theorem, PAM (Pulse Amplitude modulation),
PPM (Pulse position modulation), PWM(Pulse Width modulation), PCM(Pulse code
modulation), quantization (uniform and non uniform), companding, line coding: unipolar, polar,
bipolar, DPCM, delta modulation, Adaptive delta modulation.

Unit V: Broadband Digital modulation : Basics of digital modulation, generation, detection


waveform representation of Amplitude shift keying (ASK), Frequency shift keying (FSK), Phase
shift keying (PSK), Quadrature phase shift keying(QPSK). Performance of these system in the
presence of noise.
