3.4 Maleic anhydride- Raw material trend

3.4.1 n-butane

n-butane is the most preferred feedstock for manufacturing maleic anhydride. Maleic anhydride
is manufactured by vapor-phase oxidation of n-butane. Major demand of butane is centered
towards manufacturing liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Global butanes industry is operated by
oil and natural gas companies from the public and private sectors. In 2013, over two-thirds of
the global consumption was for fuel uses (LPG) in residential/commercial, industrial, and engine
fuel markets. Butanes for the refinery gasoline pool (including alkylation) represented over xx%
of the total demand, and butanes consumption for petrochemicals was over xx%.

3.5 Technology outlook

Maleic anhydride (MAN) is an organic intermediate for several industrial compounds such as
malic or maleic acid, unsaturated polyester resins, lubricating oil additives, alkenyl succinic
anhydrides and fumaric acid. Molecular structure of MAN enables it as an excellent conjunction
and cross linking agent. It also forms an integral structural component in industrial copolymers.

3.5.1 Fixed bed technology

In the fixed bed route, preheated air is mixed with superheated butane and is fed to the catalytic
reactor containing silica-based vanadium-phosphorous oxide (VPO) catalysts. The oxidation
reaction takes place at temperature ranging from 400 degree C to 430 degree C. Following the
oxidation, reaction gases are cooled and MAN is condensed along with other by-products. MAN
is recovered from maleic acid in the water scrubber by dehydration. Further, crude MAN is
purified by low pressure distillation process.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

3.5.2 Fluidized bed technology

Fluidized bed manufacturing technique has added advantages in terms of improved energy
balance and operational ability requiring half the air rate when compared to fixed bed
technology. Additionally, this system has been reported to have enhanced economy of scale.
The oxidation takes place in the temperature range of 325-400 degree C and at nearly-constant
space-time values.

Maleic Anhydride Market Analysis and Segment Forecasts To 2024

3.6 Regulatory Scenario

Maleic anhydride (MAN) is an organic chemical intermediate for the manufacture of numerous
products including unsaturated polyester resins (UPR), MAN-based copolymers, lube oil
additives, alkyl succinic anhydrides (ASA), malic acid, fumaric acid and various agricultural
chemicals. UPR’s are used in boats, automobiles, buildings, piping, and electrical goods.

MAN-based copolymers consist of a wide variety of copolymers with diverse applications

including compatibilizers and coupling agents with polyolefins and as thickeners, dispersants
and stabilizing agents in consumer products such as cosmetics and toiletries. Lube oil additives
synthesized from maleic anhydride are used to prolong oil change intervals and improve engine
efficiency. Agricultural chemicals from maleic anhydride include pesticides, herbicides and
growth regulators.

Maleic anhydride rapidly forms maleic acid when in contact with water. This acid is an irritant
and skin sensitizer. Consumer exposure to maleic anhydride is uncommon, and worker
exposure is controlled by protective equipment and ventilation. This acid is corrosive, and will
cause burns on contact.

As a result, maleic anhydride contact with dry skin will cause a delayed burning sensation, while
contact with wet or sweaty skin will cause an immediate burning sensation. Inhalation of maleic
vapor may cause damage to throat, larynx, and lungs. Eye exposure will cause burning, and
sensitivity to bright light. Eye damage is possible from exposure to both maleic anhydride
powder and vapors.

Extended exposure to maleic anhydride can cause skin sensitization, upper respiratory lesions,
and shortness of breath.

3.10.1.1 Grow ing BDO demand in textiles and fabrics

Maleic anhydride is used to manufacture 1,4-butanediol (BDO) by Davy Process Technology

(DPT). In this process maleic anhydride is converted to the ester which then undergoes fixed-
bed hydrogenolysis to make a mixture of BDO, THF and GBL.

BDO is an intermediate chemical for tetrahydrofuran (THF), polytetramethylene ether glycol

(PTMEG), gamma-butyrolactone (GBL), polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), and polyurethane
(PU). These chemicals are widely used in engineering plastics, fibers, medicines, artificial
leather, cosmetics, pesticides, hardener, plasticizers, solvent, and rust remover.

THF is widely used in production of PTMEG and thermoplastic urethane elastomers. Increasing
spandex demand is expected to significantly increase THF demand, which is an essential raw
material for its production. The segment accounted for xx%, xx% of the overall market in 2012
and 2015 respectively.

Textiles and apparel are major end-uses for spandex. More than 50% of spandex produced
globally is consumed in textile fibers which are processed into women’s clothing, hosiery,
undergarments, sports and other apparel. Spandex is widely utilized in the textile industry owing
to high flexibility, stretch, comfort, durability and overall aesthetic appeal.

3.10.2.1 Volatile raw material prices

Benzene and n-butane are the primary feedstock for manufacturing maleic anhydride. Globally,
benzene and n-butane prices depend on the price trend of naphtha and crude oil. Volatile crude
oil prices have been the major reason for high fluctuation in benzene prices over the forecast
period.

Global petroleum derivatives industry is highly dependent on the crude oil pricing and
downstream demand. Crude oil prices were observed to be highly volatile during early 2000s.
