Attribute Details
We have estimated the contact lenses market by segmenting it into four levels. For the first level,
we have split the market by products:
• RPG contact lenses: Rigid Permeable Gas (RPG) contact lenses, also known as Gas
Permeable (GP) contact lenses, are rigid lenses made of durable plastic that transmits
oxygen. These lenses also are called rigid gas permeable lenses, RGP lenses, and oxygen
permeable lenses.
• Soft contact lenses: Soft contact lenses are made of flexible soft plastic that permits oxygen
to pass via cornea. Soft contact lenses are more comfortable than rigid gas permeable lenses
and are easy to adjust on eyes.
• Hybrid contact lenses: Hybrid contact lenses provide all the benefits of soft contact lenses
and GP lenses
In the second level, the market has been split by design type into:
• Spherical: Spherical lenses are optical lenses with curved surfaces that converge or diverge
light rays, thus forming a real or virtual image of an object. They are also known as singlets.
• Toric: Toric contact lenses are specifically designed to meet the distinct vision correction
necessities of people with astigmatism
• Multi-focal: Multi-focal contact lenses are contact lenses with multiple prescriptions in one
lens. There is typically a prescription for very close objects, a prescription for intermediate
distances, and another prescription for normal objects viewed at a distance.
• Others: Others include orthokeratology lenses and numerous custom fabricated contact
lenses that are used in correction for keratoconus
In the third level, the market has been split by usage type into:
• Corrective lenses: The corrective lens is worn in front of the eye. It is primarily used to treat
astigmatism, hyperopia, myopia, and presbyopia.
• Therapeutic lenses Therapeutic contact lenses are also known as a "bandage lens". They
are designed to aid and protect in the healing of a sick eye.
• Cosmetic lenses: Cosmetic contact lenses are tinted to change the appearance of the eye
color. They are available in soft or rigid gas permeable varieties. These lenses are also used
as a cure to correct near and farsightedness.
• Prosthetic lenses: Prosthetic contact lenses are prescribed to improve the appearance of an
eye and to mask flaws, trauma, or eye disease
• Lifestyle-oriented lenses Lifestyle lenses offer additional benefits than curing cataracts.
They can often correct additional vision problems and offer a full range of intermediate, near,
and distance vision.
• Others include numerous lenses fabricated to be used for corrective purposes and to treat
specific eye disorders
Further, we have estimated the contact lenses market by segmenting it into the following regions:
o The North American regional segmentation includes the markets of the U.S.,
Canada, and Mexico
o The European regional segmentation includes the markets of the UK and Germany
o The Asia Pacific regional segmentation includes the markets of China and Japan
o The South American regional segmentation includes the market of Brazil and the rest
of South American countries
o The Middle Eastern and African regional segmentation includes the markets of
Qatar and the rest of MEA countries

The global market for contact lenses is expected to rise at a faster pace in the Asia Pacific and
South American regions. The global demand for contact lenses system installations was around
xx thousand units in 2016 and is expected to reach xx thousand units by 2025, growing at a CAGR
of xx% from 2016 to 2025.
Significant growth of the contact lenses market can be attributed to factors such as increasing
adoption rate by the customers, technological advancement such as development of silicon
hydrogel material for the fabrication of soft lenses.

Contact lens manufacturers are providers to wholesale distributors as well as retail distributors.
Manufacturers distribute their contact lenses through a variety of channels. Sellers can be
grouped into a number of different categories marked by their mode of selling, commercial focus,
and professional credentials. The two primary groups are independent and commercial sellers.
Independent Eye Care Practitioners (ECPs) are ophthalmologists and optometrists who prescribe
and sell optical products.
Plastic polymers are used for manufacturing contact lenses. Soft contact lenses are made of
polymers having hydrophilic qualities such as Poly Hydroxyethyl Methacrylate (pHEMA). Hard
contact lenses are made of stiffer polymers like Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA). PMMA and
pHEMA are malleable and sturdy plastic polymers.

Technological advancements in the field of optometry and optics have foreseen R&D and the
launch of dynamic soft contact lenses with advanced technology infused in them. In April 2016,
Sony filed a patent application that labels a pair of lenses with an organic electroluminescence
display screen. This permits users to view images, videos, and other digital data. Furthermore,
the lens designers have incorporated video recorder onboard that allows users to record videos
with exposure, autofocus, along with zooming and aperture adjustment to enhance the quality of
the video. The Sony contact lenses can be controlled by the user with the blink of an eye. Wearers
can use their blink to delete frames in a video recording and more.
While spectacles have been used traditionally to compensate for visual inaccuracies, the demand
for contact lenses as an additional item for vision correction is on the rise. In addition to ensuring
the correction of ophthalmic disorders such as myopia, hypermetropia, and astigmatism, contact
lenses can be used for cosmetic purposes to enhance the aesthetic appearance. The growing
demand for vision correction products is expected to be the key driving force for the market over
the next eight years.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Key:
The growth in global population accompanied with the raising technological innovations have
drastically increased the digital on-screen time of the general populace, especially in children.
Children living in urban areas have access to the modern day digital technology that has ultimately
ensued in the growth of associated ophthalmic disorders. This has drastically increased the
number of cases associated with ophthalmic problems such as myopia/nearsightedness,
farsightedness/hyperopia, glaucoma, and cataracts.

Growth Rate
(Low)
Penetration is defined as the maturity of the product segment and its application. The lower penetration rate means a higher untapped
market potential for growth.
Growth rate is considered as the future projected CAGR till 2025. These growth rates are comparative in nature with the overall
market growth rate as being the benchmark.
Note: The above diagram is based on the contact lenses shipments’ forecast by the year 2025.
Soft contact lenses offer several advantages over their RGP lens counterparts such as greater
comfort and flexibility. They also permit more oxygen to pass through to the wearer’s cornea and
are used extensively for ametropia correction. Owing to the benefits, the market for soft contact
lenses has escalated over the past few years and is expected to remain a dominant force over
the forecast period. For instance, In June 2016, CooperVision Inc., had launched ‘Biofinity Lenses’
that are specifically designed to reduce pressure applied on eyes, getting elongated on-screen
exposure.
