The SWOT analysis is a business tool to help improve the marketing skills of the

organization. The developer of this tool suggests SWOT should be used twice a year for best

results. SWOT stands for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats, to the business. It

acknowledges that strengths and weaknesses can be controlled, therefore they are considered

internal aspects. And opportunities and threats are external aspects that cannot be controlled. The

SWOT analysis is used to help organizations fix their marketing within categories that have the

most potential to reap benefits.

Strengths

A SWOT analysis for Jacksonville Mayo Clinic follows. Internal Factors, specifically

Strengths include Jacksonville Mayo Clinics reputation. Over the past several years, Mayo

Clinic has achieved a place among top hospitals in the nation (“Top Ranked in Florida”). For

2017 to 2018, the Jacksonville location Mayo Clinic was ranked number one in Florida by the

United States News and World Report and number one in Jacksonville. Mayo Clinic is known

for treating “highly specialized problems and delivering complex, multispecialty care” (Helmers

et al., 2016). Next is the organizations greatly experienced experts. Mayo Clinic treats over one

million people per year. Thus, the specialized medical providers are highly experienced in rare

and complex treatment based procedures (“Top Ranked in Florida”). Another strength is its

unique and refined diagnosis. A recent study by Mayo Clinic found 88% of patients that came to

Mayo clinic to receive another opinion on their diagnosis found a new and refined diagnosis

(“Top Ranked in Florida”). A fourth strength is Mayo Clinic’s dynamic and efficient care. At

Mayo Clinic, there is a dynamic team of versified medical experts offering each patient seamless

care, most often done in a shorter time frame than within other health care organization (“Top

Ranked in Florida”).
Mayo Clinic also has an integrated, patient- centered approach. Mayo Clinic is well

equipped with a diversified experience team of healthcare providers. This allows an

comprehensive, dynamic and efficient approach and treatment solutions (“Top Ranked in

Florida”). Further, Jacksonville Mayo Clinic has an all-inclusive campus. The Jacksonville

campus includes two hotels, cafes and gift shops, all within the same relative location. This is

very convenient for those traveling from afar to receive treatment at Mayo Clinic (“Mayo

Clinic's Campus”). Mayo Clinic also offers international services. Mayo Clinic Jacksonville

website provides international services to help those traveling avoid any possible language or

distance barriers. The offer English, Spanish, Mandarin, Portuguese and Arabic language tools.

In addition, Mayo Clinic offers billing and insurance services. Mayo Clinic provides patient

account services to help assist those with questions on billing and insurance information.

Another online tool is their patient online services. Mayo clinic provides an online portal for

patients to receive information regarding appointments, quickly and efficiently.

To continue with their strengths, Mayo Clinic has a cancer education center. Mayo Clinic

in Jacksonville has a unique center run by specialist who welcome patients to help them become

more informed and aware of their condition. They also have community tools and outreach

services. Mayo Clinic offers clinics and events open to the public, advertised on their website.

Mayo Clinic offers regular publications and newsletters via email to inform patients on new care

and research announcements (“About Mayo Clinic”). Finally, Mayo Clinic possess great

technology advantages. Mayo Clinic practices using advanced, state of the art medical

technology (“About Mayo Clinic”).

Weaknesses
Mayo Clinic in Florida is faced with challenges every day that originate from its

weaknesses. The first weakness of Mayo Clinic is that it specializes in very specific health

conditions such as Cancer, Pulmonology, GI Surgery and Gastroenterology, Orthopedics, Ear,

Nose and Throat, Gynecology, Neurology, and Neurosurgery. Mayo Clinic in Florida

concentrates on these specialties and is ranked nationally among the top 50 hospitals (“Top

Ranked in Florida”, n.d.). However, Mayo Clinic in Florida is lacking pediatric care specialists.

The lack of pediatric specialization at Mayo clinic Florida reduces patients visits (Porter,

2008).

The second weakness is the possibility of cultural conflict. Mayo Clinic is located only

in Florida, Arizona, and Minnesota. In order to get high-quality medical care, people came to

Mayo Clinics from around the world. This means people with different cultures, beliefs,

religions, languages from around the world visit Florida Mayo Clinic. Therefore, people tend to

be dissatisfied because they get a service that didn't match their cultural or religious benefits.

Additionally, in 2003 the Florida clinic location no longer became a Medicare provider.

This affects a great number of people who might partake in their services especially since

Medicare is the government health insurance which millions of people in America rely on. As a

result of this change, Mayo now has the ability to charge Medicare patients higher costs

compared to what this government program would typically allow for outpatient care and

physician services in the U.S. (Cox, 2009).

Opportunities

Opportunities arise from analyzing the external environment and finding beneficial

pursuits. The Mayo Clinic has grown and adapted to be a leading healthcare organization in the

world because the organization always looks to the future and opportunities have been seized
successfully. The Mayo Clinic Jacksonville campus itself is an example of an opportunity that

turned into action. Expansion will always be an opportunity as long as there is need and

resources. Mayo clinic is constantly expanding their facilities and scope of services. Currently,

the Minnesota campus is conducting a 5.6 billion dollar renovation that will take place over 20

years ("Why Rochester?", n.d.). The goal is to become a Destination Medical Center where

people come from all over the globe to receive treatment. Basically, this nearly neutralizes other

health care competitors in the area and becomes a threat to those around the world. If there is

success with this approach, the Jacksonville campus could see a major expansion in years to

come. However, Mayo Clinic may benefit more by extending its services by making new

locations and centers across Florida while keeping Jacksonville the main campus in the South.

Florida is the 4th largest state and many of which are 65 or older ("Florida", n.d.). This

information implies that healthcare is very utilized in Florida. Mayo Clinic could open up

primary care services or other hospital locations near select areas such as Orlando and South

Florida. This would allow patients to have access to Mayo Clinic rather than settling for a local

hospitals that may not have as high quality of care or specialization. Also, when patients are back

in their hometown after receiving treatment from the a Mayo Clinic campus, the primary care

services will allow the continuity of care to be seamless. One way to find opportunities is to

conduct a Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA). In Jacksonville, the top 10 needs are

access to care, communicable diseases, diabetes, health disparities, maternal and child health,

mental health, obesity/nutrition/lifestyle, poverty, smoking, and transportation ("Center for

Clinical and Translational Science", 2018). Mayo Clinic Jacksonville could use this information

to create new services and programs or increase advertisement of existing programs services to

help with diabetes, healthy lifestyles, mental health, and smoking cessation. Research alone
opens many opportunities through discovering new treatments and pathologies then

implementing that knowledge into clinical practice ("The Science of Best Practice", 2017). This

CHNA show that diabetes is a problem. It may be an opportunity to increase research efforts in

this area to bring in diabetes patients that want the lastest care. Since transportation is an issue,

an opportunity for Mayo Clinic Jacksonville is to research and implement virtual visits so that

patients would not have to make the trip every time the doctor needs to speak or check on them.

The needs brought up in the CHNA are related to poverty issues. A mobile clinic with low cost

services may be another opportunity for Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville. This mobile clinic will go

to the most in need locations around Duval County to increase access to healthcare and eliminate

the need for transportation to access healthcare. The clinic will help treat communicable diseases

and provide prevention and education about obesity, diabetes, and smoking. The funding for this

clinic would be covered through donation, volunteers, and the extra revenue generated from not

accepting Medicare patients.

Threats

There are certain threats that can arise with an organization through competition and

needs for vital resources. These things can stand in the way of success and in the ever changing

health care system it’s easy for health care facilities to fall short. With the Mayo Clinic spending

millions of dollars a year on expanding their facilities and bettering patient centered care,

advertising for the company falls lower and lower on the list which leads them closer to potential

threats (Ward, n.d.). Other competitors spend a lot of time on advertisements and less on

resources. However, to the consumer eye, the advertisements are most appealing. Mayo Clinic

has done a good job keeping up a reputation and has many good reviews, and a strong media

standing is always important. This being said, their large success can also lead to some
unintentional threats. Patient care is a sensitive topic because these kinds of consumers are not

just looking for goods they are looking out for their health, so they will take more precautions

than most. Certain patients may prefer a more one-on-one medical experience instead of one

with a strong media following. As mentioned in the “weakness” category, Mayo Clinic also has a

lack of pediatrics which will cause patients to go elsewhere, even if they aren’t seeking child

care and other facilities will take advantage of that (Porter, 2008).
