What’s New

Read the story below. Analyze the situation then answer the following
questions in your notebook.

Ana, a grade 10 student once went to the

local mall to buy materials for a Health subject
project. Upon passing by some stalls, she was
invited for a free orientation on the latest product
of a company. The company was selling “health
bracelet” that can detect the mood of a person
and help lower body temperature and blood
pressure. Ana was easily attracted, which made
her buy two health bracelets for herself and her
brother Miguel. She spent Php 850 for the items.

After a week, Ana and Miguel developed

red spots and rashes on their wrist area. Upon
checking, the bracelets are observed to have
rust around them. Ana wants to file a complaint
so the company may return her money.

3
1. What is the nature of the Ana’s problem?
2. What should Ana have done before buying a health product to avoid the said problem?
3. What would you ask yourself before buying a health product to avoid the same
experience?

What is It

With the above story, the teenager’s problem was all about the health information they
have heard and motivated them to avail health products. Health products and services
must be carefully selected and analyze before availing them to prevent further health
problems and cost. Criteria in the selection and evaluation of health information,
products and services must be taken into
consideration in knowing and patronizing various
forms of health service providers and healthcare
plans.

Since we are all consumers, normally we get health

information, health products, and health services to
appraise, improve, and maintain our health. Health
information are the things we hear from people
around us, read from books and other printed
materials, or from the media that influence our
health. We must be knowledgeable and skilled
enough in identifying this health information to https://depositphotos.com/stock-photos/media-

health services.

A. Health Information

According to the study of Payne, et al., in 2005 defined Health information as any
concept, step, or advice that various sources give to aid or alter the health
conditions/status of an individual. While Galvez Tan, et al., 2009, characterized
information by being timely, relevant, culturally appropriate, accessible, and delivered
in a relevant format.

Reliable sources of health information and

• health books
• accredited online sources
• licensed professionals who took up
intensive studies in the field

Unreliable sources of information and
products:
• those from people who are not experts in
this field
• people, media, and internet sites not
accredited by health organizations

To avoid fraud, health information should be

appraised by scientific guides; that is
unreliable sources of health information be
differentiated by applying sound scientific
criteria. Then, a selection of the products and
services needed should be made on the basis of findings.

B. Health Products

5
According to FDA Act of 2009, Health products are food, drugs, cosmetics, devices,
biologicals, vaccines, in-vitro diagnostic reagents, and household/urban hazardous
substances and/or a combination of and/or a derivative thereof. These products may
be purchased from various places like supermarkets, pharmacies, and hospitals

All of us are purchasers of goods and services. If we are to buy wisely from the standpoint
of health and safety, we must:
• Just which products and services will be beneficial, harmful or useless
• Know the local laws and regulations that protect consumers
• Locate dependable medical, dental and nursing services
• Apply the knowledge acquired in respect to personal and environmental health
in the purchase of personal services and of goods.

C. Health Services

https://depositphotos.com/stock-photos/health-services.html?filter=all&qview=100937078

Health services are often connected to healthcare, called as programs aiming to appraise
the health conditions of individuals through screening and examinations, cure and treat
disorders, prevent and control the spread of diseases, provide safety, emergency care,
and first aid, and ensure a follow-up program for individuals who have undergone
treatments.

https://depositphotos.com/stock-photos/healthcare-professionals.html?filter=all&qview=12048353

6
Health services are usually offered by healthcare providers. “A healthcare provider is a
trained professional who provides people with healthcare” (Meeks, et al., 2011). There
are different types of healthcare providers, such as:

I. Health Professionals

https://depositphotos.com/stock-photos/health-professionals.html?filter=all

Individuals who are licensed to practice medicine and other allied health programs. An
example of a health professional is a physician. A physician records the medical history
of individuals, provides diagnoses, performs medical examinations, and prescribes
medications. There are different types of physicians based on their area of specialization.
(Niles, N.J. 2011)

DO YOU KNOW?
Healthcare practitioners and allied health professionals are also
considered health care providers.

An independent healthcare provider who is licensed to practice on a

specific area of the body is also known as healthcare practitioner. Some
examples of healthcare practitioners are podiatrists (who specialize in the
problems of the feet), dentists, and optometrists.

On the other hand, “an allied health professional is a trained

healthcare provider who practices under the supervision of a physician or
healthcare practitioner. Nurses, dieticians, pharmacists, and physical
therapists are examples of allied health professionals.

II. Healthcare Facilities

Healthcare facilities are places or institutions that

offer healthcare services. According Meeks, et al. in
2011, there are different types of healthcare facilities.

a. Hospital
It is an institution where people undergo medical
diagnosis, care and treatment. A hospital offers
different types of medical care like inpatient and https://depositphotos.com/stock-

7
b. Walk-In Surgery Center
It is a facility that offers surgery without the patient
being admitted in the hospital.

c. Health Center

population with various health needs.

d. Extended Healthcare Facility
A facility that provides treatment, nursing care, and
residential services to patients, often the elderly.

III. Health Insurance

According to Payne, et al., 2005, Health

insurance is a financial agreement between
an insurance company and an individual or
group for the payment of healthcare costs.

Types of coverage:
Medical insurance pays for the fees of the
health professionals, laboratory tests, and
prescription drugs.
Major medical insurance offers payment for

and cancer.
Hospitalization insurance pays for the stay of the patient inside the hospital. Surgical
insurance pays for surgery fees.
Disability insurance provides financing for members who meet accidents or suffer from
illnesses.

contributions-january-2020.html

8
Health insurance may be sourced from both public
and private companies. An example of public health
insurance is PhilHealth. As mandated by law in the
country, employees of both public and private
companies avail of PhilHealth.

A health maintenance organization (HMO) is a

healthcare provider that offers medical services that
are availed through a prepaid amount of money. It is https://depositphotos.com/stock-
a business that requires a relatively reduced monthly photos/hmo.html?filter=all&qview=12154081
fee for subscribers. The difference of an HMO with
other insurance companies is that it hires or trains its own health professionals and
healthcare practitioners.
