What I Need to Know
This module was written and designed to make learning easier especially as we
are in the “new normal” situation. As an educational tool, this module about the
Assessment of Health Information, Products and Services challenges you as a
learner, to become creative, resourceful and independent. The scope of the
module provides a variety of activities that will stimulate independent and self-
guided learning experience. Lessons in this module are arranged to follow the
standard sequence of the course to ensure effective learning continuity, make
the experience more meaningful, effective and relevant to life situations.
This module will help you understand the basics of consumer health. It is a
must to develop a person’s ability to evaluate and utilize health information,
products, and services wisely and effectively to be able to attain consumer
health.

thinking and decision-making skills in the selection, evaluation, and utilization
of health information, products, and services.

What is It
With the above story, the teenager’s problem was all about the health information they
have heard and motivated them to avail health products. Health products and services
must be carefully selected and analyze before availing them to prevent further health
problems and cost. Criteria in the selection and evaluation of health information,
products and services must be taken into
consideration in knowing and patronizing various
forms of health service providers and healthcare
plans.
A. Health Information
According to the study of Payne, et al., in 2005 defined Health information as any
concept, step, or advice that various sources give to aid or alter the health
conditions/status of an individual. While Galvez Tan, et al., 2009, characterized
information by being timely, relevant, culturally appropriate, accessible, and delivered
in a relevant format.

B. Health Products

According to FDA Act of 2009, Health products are food, drugs, cosmetics, devices,
biologicals, vaccines, in-vitro diagnostic reagents, and household/urban hazardous
substances and/or a combination of and/or a derivative thereof. These products may
be purchased from various places like supermarkets, pharmacies, and hospitals
All of us are purchasers of goods and services. If we are to buy wisely from the standpoint
of health and safety, we must:
• Just which products and services will be beneficial, harmful or useless
• Know the local laws and regulations that protect consumers
• Locate dependable medical, dental and nursing services
• Apply the knowledge acquired in respect to personal and environmental health
in the purchase of personal services and of goods.

Health services are often connected to healthcare, called as programs aiming to appraise
the health conditions of individuals through screening and examinations, cure and treat
disorders, prevent and control the spread of diseases, provide safety, emergency care,
and first aid, and ensure a follow-up program for individuals who have undergone
treatments.

Health services are usually offered by healthcare providers. “A healthcare provider is a
trained professional who provides people with healthcare” (Meeks, et al., 2011). There
are different types of healthcare providers, such as:

Individuals who are licensed to practice medicine and other allied health programs. An
example of a health professional is a physician. A physician records the medical history
of individuals, provides diagnoses, performs medical examinations, and prescribes
medications. There are different types of physicians based on their area of specialization.
