Introduction

Love is defined by an intense feeling from the opposite sex that makes our heart
beat faster, gives butterflies in our stomach and so much more but, people depend on
how they feel during that time. Did we ever thought of how a person or human manage
to express their love to another person? Although, that may not be the basis of love. If us,
people, didn’t know the true meaning of love or we don’t have a standard for it, what
more for robots? How can robots show or express love if they didn’t even know the
standards and limitations of it?

Plot Synopsis

The story started with the professor explaining how he makes a robot or what he
calls a mecha to revolutionize the way people perceive robots. He wants to make a
robot that can love. The movie continues to narrate and continue the story of the
Swintons, they have a son named martin who has a disease that waits for a cure to come.
Monica, Martins mom was so sad that she cannot take that his son will be taken from her.
Henry, her husband is an employee at the robot making facility by the professor and
wants to help her wife cope up with what she’s going through.

They tried to adapt, at first it was hard but after sometime Monica was decided to put
the emotions of Martin to the mecha named David. David the mecha calls monica her
mommy and he tries to act like a real person or a child. A robot teddy bear was made
called “teddy” to give him company that looks like the one that used to belong to Martin.
A cure came and Martin was okay. But Martin is not okay with David as person but he
sees him as a toy. One day, Martin asked Monica to read them the story “ Pinocchio”, to
which the mecha David was amazed, he seemed that the story was possible that a
wodden puppet like pinochio will be a real person because of the Blue Fairy.

Martin still doesn’t want David to be around so he tried to put David in a lot of trouble just
to get rid of him. One incident lead to Henry deciding that the mecha is no longer safe
for him to be around his family. He conviced her to get rid of David. Monica tried to
abandon David in the forest along with the best friend of his, Teddy. At this point, David
is really confused why he is left by her mother. He then searches for the reason why he is
abandoned, while doing so, he managed to see a lot of piles of junk and repair parts for
mechas like him. But they were captured with the guy named Gigolo Joe. They were
brought to a place where mechas like them were hated. Mechas that are brought there
were destroyed and thrown acids at. But David managed to cry, he showed that he is a
real boy. The crowd rioted and David and Joe were freed.

David managed to tell the story of the Blue Fairy to Joe. Joe said that they can find her
in the city. They hitched a ride to go to the city. They met Dr. Know, he is like the Einstein
and explains everything to them. There he asked every question he wants but it took a
lot of questions before they managed to go to the place called “manhattan” where
many mechas has gone to but they never returned.

They managed to go to a flooded city that looks like New York City and where they found
Cybertronics building. David founds out that there are more like him. He was jealous that
the mechas that looked like him will replace him so he destroyed them, all of them. There
he reveals himself, the professor. He explained that the Blue Fairy is just a myth. As he walk
across the room, there he saw more evidence that he is just a robot which made him feel
worse. He doesn’t know how to become a human and regain his mothers love.

He jumps out of the window and drowns himself in the waters, there he sees a helicopter
and grabs him out of the water. It was Joe, and he says that he saw the Blue Fairy. David
and his teddy managed to go deep into the submerged city and there they saw the
themed park where they found a statue of the blue fairy. He prays to the fairy, wishing
he was a real boy.

Two thousand years passed, and all human beings are non existent. There were new
mechas that looked like aliens and saw David and his teddy in the helicopter they had.

They search in his memories and saw that the robot that they discovered used to live with
humans. Which makes David their ancestor. Using their memories, they made an
alternative reality of the house they used to live in, there David meets a creation,The Blue
Fairy, where he wishes to be a real boy and to see her mother again. The Fairy explained
that he needs to have a hair sample or human tissue to bring back humans. Teddy reveals
a hair sample from David’s mother. David wishes to be back with her mom since she
have now a sample of her dna. But the mecha explained that his wish will never last.
Because of the long time that humans have died, all that they can do is to bring her back
for one day. This didn’t stop David from meeting her mom. The futuristic mechas grant his
wish and brought her mom back to life. They spent a day together and David tells how
much he loves her mom. With everything in place, David sleeps, happy and contented
at last.

Themes

The general theme of the movie is science – how it evolved and advanced
through time. I can say that the movie taught us how to understand that artificial
intelligence can bring a lot of different emotion depending on who uses it. For monica, it
brought her happiness that made her feel that she was with her son, that he never lost
one. But for Martin, he sees the robot as a threat – someone who can replace him, a toy
that will just hurt him and his family.

Visual Elements

The visual element of the film was extraordinary. It was filmed like there were real
robots in the scene. They managed to incorporate the human beings living with the
robots or mechas as what they were referred to in the movie.

Conclusion

There are a lot of things that happened in the film. It was fascinating how a film
made in 2001 has predicted such a thing. The mecha in the movie, where David
managed to show love in enormous ways not every human being is capable of showing.
The movie gave us insights on what is real and what is not. The movie showed that no
machine nor any artificially made stuff can surpass any human in terms of the aspect of
love. Technology is indeed fascinating. The movie managed to show how such
technological advancement can lead to different or countless of outcomes or
possibilities.
