Activity: Film Viewing

“Artificial Intelligence” also known as “A.I.” by Steven Spielberg.

I. At the beginning of the movie, Professor Hobby states that “to create an artificial being has
been the dream of man since the birth of science.” There’s probably an element of truth to
this. Why do we have this fascination?

- The element of truth behind what Professor Hobby states, which is “to create an
artificial being has been the dream of man since the birth of science” derives from
humanity’s natural curiosity and imagination. Creating artificial beings allows
humans to satisfy that curiosity and innovate.Since science enables us to develop
and discover new technologies, our fascination in creating artificial beings pushes
the boundaries of what is possible. Their curiosity and interest lead them to
discover and develop something new in the field of science

II. One of the scientists at Cybertronics asks, “If a robot could genuinely love a person, what
responsibility does that person hold toward that mecha in return?” Professor Hobby
responds, “In the beginning, didn’t God create Adam to love him?” What is implied by
Professor Hobby’s answer?

- The creation of this mecha, an artificial intelligence that can love and dream like a
person, was not as simple as that. It challenges the users of the creation with the
conundrum of whether these AIs can help humans love them back. The
responsibility held by a person to have regard for the mecha was clearly to return
them the love and to fully satisfy what these specific AIs were designed to do.
Professor Hobby, the mind behind the innovation, claimed that Adam was created
by the loving God to have a reciprocating relationship in order to learn to love
him and love Him back. What he tries to imply by this idea is that, just like God,
Professor Hobby created this mecha to love him or the one who takes care of it.

III. Consider some of the imagery the Flesh Fair: motorcycles, cowboy hats, heavy metal music,
flannel shirts. What statement does this make about the kind of humans that opposed
robots?
- Humans made robots and expected them to be ideal for doing various tasks
especially in some slightly complicated tasks, but even though robots are great at
doing things, they are not capable of doing other things and they don't have the
same brain and heart like humans do. The human brain and heart is more
developed and has a lot of differences from the robots thus making humans more
powerful and creative. The human mind and heart also has a lot of things that the
robots can not do or feel, this was shown in the scene flesh fair wherein the

humans showed passion, culture, and it can be humans being rebellious because
they don't want robots to be part of their life or in their daily task. The imagery
may show that the humans are rejecting the robots and are showing dominance.

IV. The owner of the Flesh Fair states that child mechas like David, were built to disarm
humans by playing on human emotions. Nevertheless, the human spectators feel sympathy
with David, particularly because he pleads for his life. What abilities would a robot have to
exhibit before we would consider it an equal with humans?
- The abilities of a robot would be needed before we would consider it an equal
with humans is its capacity to have emotional intelligence, empathy, and
self-awareness. As we can see in the movie, David is programmed and capable to
experience love that is given to him by his new adopted parents Monica and
Henry. When the original son of Monica and Henry came home from coma David
felt jealousy because he kept seeking the love of Monica for him. David has his
desired to become a real boy that leads him to find the Blue Fairy, it is a character
from the book that he remembers from the Story of Pinocchio, and he believes
that it can turn him into real human and he will regain Monica's love for him, that
leads to why he is in the Flesh Fair. At the Flesh Fair David shows or displays
genuine emotions when he pleads for his life shows fear in his eyes and that's why
human spectators feel sympathy with David. In the end of the story Monica and
David had reunited again, David is granted by his wish to spend time with Monica
because of his longing for Monicas love, at the end of the story David shows a
genuine emotions of love for Monica.

V. Gigolo Joe tells David that his mother does not love him, but only loves what he does for her.
Is it plausible to think that a normal human could love a robot as though it were a real
human?

In the story, where monica is longing for her son and Henry, her husband find a
way to ease the pain of his wife by having a mecha-child—a hundred miles of
fibers but outside he looks so real like a child. I can feel that monica loves david,
the mecha-child, because the emptiness of her was filled by david in a short
period of time. It is true that her child is irreplaceable but as a viewer, I can tell
that monica is also attached to david as time goes by and starting to love him like
her real son.

In real life, it depends on how a person define the word "love", for me i love
people the way they are, not for a personally gain. If i have a chance to have a
mecha-friend, then yes it is plausible that i will love a robol even though it is not a
real human, maybe they lack emotional capabilities to handle me, but having them
by my side is enough to make me feel loved. Furthermore, I also believed that if a
human can love animal like cats and dogs, it is not also possible for a normal
human to love a robot especially when they can build a strong rapport. However,
a robot as a lover? that is a complex topic and more on psychological frsmework
of a person.
