REFLECTION PAPER ON MOVIE

‘EX MACHINA 2015’

Humans have high intellectual capacity among all, who are living here on earth. Through
their knowledge they have discover various kinds of things, even the smallest unit of matter - the
atom. From those smallest particles they have invented nuclear power that serve as the source
of electricity. They have created numerous invention for instance, computers, industrial
machines, robots, cellphones, and many more, which these can help them to have a
convenient, easier, and lighter life, but they also invented things that could cause harm to others
such as explosives - that can cause death to everyone and plastics - that causes pollution on
land, on water and even on air, and death to the animals that mistaken this as a food. Human
also developed another product of intelligence, the Artificial Intelligence that has potential in
helping our world today. AI's in colloquial term is a machine that functions like human or with
cognitive function; they also learn and solve problems. Some AI's are SIRI, self-driving car,
machine with facial recognition and etc. But in some science fiction movies AI's are portrayed
by robots with human characteristics; they can talk, can walk, and can think as if they are real
one. The movie Ex Machina 2015 is one of many films that tell the stories of Robots with artificial
intelligence.
This movie is about the story of Ava - a robot with artificial intelligence invented by
Nathan and tested by Caleb. Caleb is a coder that was chosen by Nathan to come to his
laboratory and examine Ava. During first session they have conversation, he asked Ava about
some personal information’s because he wants to know something about her. Ava told him that
she is 1, and he asked her when she learns how to speak, she answered that she always know
how to speak. In the second session, she shows an image to Caleb that even she does not know
what it is. Then Caleb said that she has to draw in detailed or specific like for example object or
person that she often saw. After that, Ava asked Caleb if he wants be friend with her, he said
yes, but she was not convince with it because his only asking Ava question about her and she
thinks that it is one sided. He learns from her but does not learn from him. And then, he started
sharing personal information’s to her, his family, his school in college, his place, his status and his
job. From then on she always warned him not to trust Nathan or anyone else.
Caleb always looking at her on the screen and begun to attract to Ava. Nathan shows
the part of laboratory to him where he assembles the robots and let him see the brain of it and
how it functions. In third session, Ava shows
a sketch with trees and plants outside her window, then he asked her if she ever been
outside, and she said no, if you’re going to have a chance to go outside where would you go.
She answered to a busy pedestrian and to have a date with him.
