Abstract
Background: Maternal mortality rate along with the infant mortality rate has been an
indicator of success in the development of the health sector. One cause of morbidity and
mortality fetal and maternal are hypertension in pregnancy. In Indonesia mortality and
morbidity of hypertension in pregnancy are still high enough for both mother and fetus.
Women with hypertension in pregnancy are at risk for having a baby with low birth weight.
This study aims to determine the relationship between preeclampsia (proteinuria+) and
gestational hypertension (proteinuria - ) with a birth weight infants in Raden Mattaher
Jambi hospital period 2012.
Methods: This study used cross-sectional study design. The study was conducted in the
Obstetrics and Gynecology section of Raden Mattaher Jambi hospital period January to
December 2012. Study sample were pregnant women who had hypertension in pregnancy,
preeclampsia and gestational hypertension types who were hospitalized in the Obstetrics
and Gynecology section of Raden Mattaher Jambi hospital period January to December
2012. Total sample in this study were 80 samples. Data collection instrument in this study
were medical records. Data were analyzed using Chi Square test analysis.
Results: Characteristic of patients with preeclampsia and gestational hypertension in
RSUD Raden Mattaher Jambi, most patients were in the age group 21-35 years (66.3%),
gestational age 39 weeks (32.5%) and the diagnosis of severe preeclampsia (52.5%). Birth
weight of 63 mothers with preeclampsia were obtained 48 (76.2%) had a normal birth
weight (2500-4000 g), 13 (20.6%) had low birth weight (<2500 grams) and 2 (3.2%) had
large birth-weight (> 4000 grams). Whereas birth weight of 17 mothers with gestational
hypertension were obtained 16 (94.1%) had a normal birth weight (2500-4000 g) and 1
(5.9%) had a large birth weight (> 4000 g). Results of chi square analysis found no
significant association between preeclampsia and gestational hypertension with birth
weight infants (p = 0.094)
Conclusions: There is no significant correlation (0.094) between preeclampsia and
gestational hypertension with birth weight infants in Raden Mattaher Jambi hospital period
2012.
