LEVELING

Activity # 3

Objective:

To become familiar with the use of a level and the skills used in differential leveling.

Tools / Instruments:

 Automatic Level, tripod, level rod

 Graduated Rod
 Paper and Pen

Procedure:

1. Set up the automatic level, tripod and level rod and set the point where it is set as BM 1
2. Site for the Back Site and then the front site to determine and record the elevations
3. Move equipment at every turning point or TPs on the site and the again record the
elevations
4. And then at upon reach the end, to the last point BM, record the elevations

Presentation of Data:

Differential Level Notes

STA BS HI FS ELEV
BM1 1.59 m 101.59 m 100 m
TP1 2.63 m 101.47 m 2.75 m 98.84 m
TP2 2.64 m 103.76 m 0.35 m 101.12 m
TP3 2.545 m 105.78 m 0.525m 103.235 m
TP4 1.962 m 107.109 m 0.633 m 105.147 m
0.936 m 106.173 m
BM2
0.675 m 106.434 m

Computation:

100 m + 1.59 m = 101.59 m (HI1)

101.59 m – 2.75 m = 98.84 m (Elev TP1)

98.84 m + 2.63 m = 101.47 m (HI2)

101.47 m – 0.35 m = 101.12 m (Elev TP2)

101.12 m + 2.64 m = 103.76 m (HI3)

103.76 m – 0.525m = 103.235 m (Elev TP3)

103.235 m + 2.545 m = 105.78 m (HI4)

105.78 m – 0.633 m = 105.147 m (Elev TP4)

105.147 m + 1.962 m = 107.109 m (HI5)

107.109 m – 0.936 m = 106.173 m (Elev1 TP5)

107.109 m – 0.675 m = 106.434 m (Elev2 TP5)

Discussion of Results:

At the first point, point BM1, the elevation is 100 m but including the height of the
instrument used for siting the elevation the elevation is 1.59 m. Next the in the first turning
point or TP1, the sited elevation is 98.84 m; in the second turning point or TP 2 the sited
elevation is 101.12 m. And for the last two remaining turning points, namely TP 3 and TP4, the
elevation of these two turning points are 103.235 m and 105.147 m respectively. And lastly
after identifying the different turning points, the BM2 should be identified too. The elevation of
BM2 is 106.173 m and 106.434 m.

Conclusion:

Therefore, I conclude, that the levelling, using the transits, graduated rods, is used to
identify the elevations any points on a given site.
