MATERIAL PROPERTIES
Chemical resistance
The polyolefines PE-HD and PP exhibit a very similar chemical resistance. They are resistant
against diluted solutions of salts, acids, and alkalis.
Up to 60° C, these materials may be used with a range of different solvents. At high temperatures,
they are dissolved by aromatic and halogenated carbohydrates.
PVC pipes are resistant to diluted and concentrated acids and bases, mineral and vegetable oils,
alcohol and aliphatic carbohydrates. Aromatic hydrocarbons and chlorohydrocarbons like esters and ketones
dissolve PVC.
PVDF is resistant to most inorganic chemicals, acids, salts, and alkalis, even in high concentrations
and at elevated temperatures. Stability against aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, organic acids, alcohols, and
aromatics is excellent. Some ketones, hot, highly concentrated alkalis, smoking sulphuric acid, amines, and
pyridine attack PVDF. Dimethyl formamide and dimethyl acetamide dissolve PVDF.
In choosing the appropriate material for a specific project, the chemical resistance needs to be
considered. It depends on the :
• Medium,
• Concentration,
• Temperature,
• the load.
The chemical resistance must be consulted for proper specification of the pipeline material
according to the composition of fluid.

MATERIAL DATA
Polyethilene PE100 :
For some time materials for pipe manufacture with a much improved creep resistance
have been available – the new high-performance grades of polyethylene in service class PE 100.
PE 100 signifies a PE-HD with a creep strain increment σ v20°C, 50a determined in a
creep test and amounting to at least 10 N/mm². In the test the creep behaviour of the material is
established assuming the following conditions: life 50 years, thermal load 20°C and water as the test
medium. Owing to the higher performance of the pipe material not only has creep strength been
improved but also other properties such as resistance to crack growth and mechanical strength.
The PE 100 pipes not only feature higher creep strength but also higher mechanical
strength and higher resistance to crack growth. This means that at a higher service pressure the same
wall thickness can be used, or if service pressure is the same, wall thickness can be reduced. In critical
applications, for example, if service pressure and wall thickness are the same, using PE 100 instead of
PE 80 can increase the safety factor.

PP pressure pipes are particularly used in the field of drinking water pressure pipes and
industrial pipework. The material, polypropylene, has excellent resistance to many acids, alkalis and
solvents.
The PP range of pipes is supplemented by an extensive range of fittings with elongated
spigots for butt welding and fittings with short spigots for butt welding and socket welding. To connect up
to pipe systems made of other materials such as PE 100 and anothers we offer you fittings for flange
assemblies.

PVDF :
As a fluoroplastic PVDF is resistant to most inorganic chemicals such as acids and salts –
even in high concentrations – and can be used across a wide range of temperatures. Compared with
other fluoroplastics PVDF offers advantages in many applications on account of its easy installation,
excellent mechanical properties, flame resistance, low specific weight and the resulting benefits in terms
of cost.
The material, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), is particularly suitable for use in industrial
pipework construction. The excellent resistance to virtually all chemicals makes PVDF the ideal material
for pipework systems transporting corrosive media. The range of pipes is rounded off by fittings with
short and elongated spigots for the various types of connection and by an extensive range of valves.
