Level echos from the blocking distance (BD) cannot be evaluated due to the transient
characteristics of the sensor. Install the Prosonic T at a height so that the blocking
distance BD is not undershot, even at maximum fill level. Use a pipe nozzle if you cannot
maintain the blocking distance in any other way. The interior of the nozzle must be
smooth and may not contain any edges or welded joints. In particular, there should be
no burr on the inside of the tank side nozzle end. Note the specified limits for nozzle
diameter and length.

6.1 Basic calibration

Reset 1. Enter "333" into the matrix position V9H5.
(V9H5) This sets all matrix positions back to the factory settings. Only the linearisation para-
meters (V2H0 ... V2H3) and the length unit (V8H2) retain their current values.

Length unit 2. In V8H2, select the length unit for all subsequent inputs:
(V8H2)
V8H2 Unit

1 ft

" Caution!
Change the unit only immediately after a reset. If you change the length unit at a later
point, all subsequent entries have to be repeated in the new unit.

Empty distance (V0H1) 3. Enter the empty distance E into V0H1 and the span F into V0H2. Use the units, which
Span (V0H2) have been selected in V8H2.
• The Empty distance E is the
distance from the sensor diaphragm
to the 0% level.

V0H0 Level in %
V0H8 Distance D from sensor diaphragm to product
surface (m or ft)
V0H9 Level in m or ft

Check, if the displayed values match the actual level.

– If the displayed distance D (V0H8) is too small: Perform an interference echo sup-
pression (page 14).
– If al false level is displayed: Adjust empty distance and span.

Current output 6. After the basic calibration the Prosonic T outputs the level in the form of a current sig-
(V9H8) nal. The complete measuring range (0% ... 100%) is mapped to the current interval
4 ... 20 mA. The current value (mA) is displayed in matrix position V9H8.

6.2 Linearization
After the basic calibration, the measured value is displayed in V0H0 as a percentage of
the span. The value can be converted into any other unit by the linearization function.
Four different modes of linearization can be selcted in V2H0.

Linearization mode Use this mode, if you want to display the level in the length unit, which has been
"Level" (V2H0=0) selected in V8H2 (m or ft).

Linearization mode Use this mode, if you want to measure:

"linear"(V2H0=5, Default) • the level in any unit other than m, ft or
%.
• the volume or weight, if the volume-to-
level relationship of your vessel is
linear.

The factory setting is V2H5=100. That means, the level is expressed in % by default.

Linearization mode Use this mode, if you want to measure

"manual" (V2H0=2) the volume or weight, and if a sufficient
number of value pairs level/volume or
level/weight are known.
You can enter up to 11 value pairs into
the linearization table. The table must be

Error message As long as a linearization table is being entered, the current output indicates an error
message. The error disappears as soon as the table is complete and activated.

Measured value display When the table has been activated, the following measured values can be read out:

Current output The current output always follows the measured value V0H0. Therefore, the
4 mA value (V0H5) and the 20 mA value (V0H6) must be adapted to the new units (see
chapter 6.3).

6.3 Current output

In V8H1 you can define the mode of the current output. You have got the following
options:

Continuous output • In the continuous mode, the output

(V8H1=0, Default) directly follows the measured value
V0H0.
• V0H5 and V0H6 define the interval of the
Measured measuring range which is mapped to
value
the current interval 4 ... 20 mA. The
100% V0H6 factory settings (V0H5=0, V0H6=100)
can only be used if no linearization is
F
V0H0 present. In any other case these values
must be specified in the unit of the
V0H5
0%
Current
linerization.
4 mA 20 mA • If V0H5 is larger than V0H6, then the
current output is inverted. That means
the current decreases if the level
increases and vice versa.

Continuous output with In addition to the linear scaling the 4 mA threshold becomes effective in this option. It
4 mA threshold makes sure, that the current output does not fall below 4 mA even if the measured value
(V8H1=1) is less than V0H5. Use this option, if your control system can not handle currents below
4 mA.

Binary output If binary output is selected, the current

Measured

8/16mA (V8H1=3) 100% V0H6
• It jumps to 20mA (or 16mA), as soon as
the measured value exceeds V0H6.

measured value falls below V0H5.

6.4 Additional parameters

Echo Quality The echo quality of the ultrasonic signal is displayed in V3H3 in steps from 1 to 10.
(V3H2) Additionally it is indicated by the bargraph in the matrix positions V0H8 and V0H9. Use
this display in order to find the best installation position. For a sound measurement, the
echo quality should be at least 5.

Interference echo The interference echo suppression is used

suppression (V3H0) when the level echo is not detected
because a fitting is generating a stronger
interference echo. Up to three interfernece
echos can be suppressed. The
suppression should be activated with the
tank as empty as possible.

Step Matrix Entry / Meaning

position
1 V0H8 Check the displayed distance between sensor diaphragm and product surface. An
interference echo suppression is necessary, if the displayed value is too low.
2 V3H0 Enter the actual distance between sensor diaphragm and product surface. Confirm
by pressing H. Wait approx. 40 s. The interference echo is suppressed.
3 V0H8 Check the displayed distance between sensor diaphragm and product surface. If
the displayed value is still to low, a furhter interference echo must be suppressed.
Therefore, repeat Step 2.

Temperature The actual temperature at the sensor is shown in V3H5. If the limit of 80°C has been
(V3H5) exceeded once, the highest value ever reached remains stored (drag indicator).

Lost echo delay time The lost echo delay time makes sure that no alarm will be output if the echo becomes
(V8H3) lost for a short period of time (for example due to foam). Values between 0 and 255 s
can be entered. The dafault setting is 60 s. For standard applications the lost echo delay
time should be not less than 30 s.

Actual level Falsifications in height in V0H9 (e.g. by temperature effects) can be corrected by
(V3H1) entering the correct height - the actual height - in V3H1. Entering the actual height then
automatically corrects the empty calibration.

First Echo Factor Vessels with tightly rounded roofs (dome covers) can cause double echos giving rise to
(V3H4) a display showing a level which is too low. Double echos can be excluded by increasing
the first echo factor to "maximum".
V3H4 First Echo Factor
0 off
1 medium
2 maximum

Output damping The effect of the output damping is to attenuate the analogue output and the measurand
(V0H4) indication on the display of the Prosonic T. When the liquid surface is not steady, a
steady reading can be obtained with the aid of the output damping. Values from 0 to
255 s can be entered. The default setting is 3 s. Please note, that the Prosonic T can not
resolve level changes faster than the output damping.

The measured value is processed by the Prosonic T in two steps and subsequently
output to external instruments. With the simulation function the correct operation of each
of these steps can be checked.

Level simulation Use the level simulation to check the linearisation:

(V9H6=1) 1. Set V9H6=1
2. In V9H7, enter a level. Use the unit, which has been selected in V8H2 (m or ft).
3. Check if V0H0 assumes the correct value.
4. Set V9H6=0 to return to the ordinary operation mode.

Volume simulation Use the volume simulation, to check the scaling of the output value:
(V9H6=2) 1. Set V9H6=2
2. In V9H7, enter a main value (level, volume or weight).
3. Check if the output current (V9H8) assumes the correct value.
4. Set V9H6=0 to return to the ordinary operation mode.

Current simulation Use the current simulation to check correct operation of the external instruments:
(V9H6=3) 1. Set V9H6=3
2. In V9H7, enter a current (in mA).
3. Now, the specified current is present at the output. Check, if the external instruments
respond correctly to this current.
