Hersey Village recount
reveals additional vote
HERSEY — Following the re-
count in the election of a Hersey
Village Trustee, Chris Willard
doubled his margin of victory.
Willard agineda vote following
the recount, which was done Dec.
11.
Following the hand recount one
vote was added to Chris Willard’s
initial 68 votes. Gretchen Pember-
ton remained at 82 votes, Jerry
Curtis at 67 and Juliet Champagne
at 49 votes.
“Chris Willard was declared a
winner, as before,” Osceola Coun-
ty Clerk Karen Bluhm said in an
email.
Curtis had filed for the recount
after the November election when
the seat came down to a 1-vote dif-
ference between him and Willard.
Going into the recount, Bluhm
said she did not expect anything
to come from the recount.
“Our machines are very accu-
rate,” she said. “I did not expect
any changes.”
However, upon recounting,
one vote was found to have been
missed due to voter error, said
Bluhm.
“We believe the vote was missed
by the machine because when
the (voter) circled in the oval, it
wasn’t filled in enough for the ma-
chine to recognize it,” she said.
With the oval not filled in all
the way, the decision could have
gone either way, said Bluhm, but
the Board of Canvassers chose to
count the vote for Willard.

boy’s life on the way home
from school, an Evart High
School senior was honored
with a life saving award.
Nichole Roys was presented
with the award at a school as-
sembly on Thursday, Dec. 13
by the Evart Police Chief John
Beam and Evart Fire Depart-
ment.
On Dec. 4 Roys saved Austin
Tennant, a 10-year-old Evart
student, from choking on a
piece of candy while on the
bus heading home.
