Christmas
in a Small Town Photos and story by Mike Dunn
Weekly Voice

EVART — The annual Christmas in a Small Town cel-

ebration sponsored by Crossroads Community Church
on Saturday was an afternoon full of fun family activi-
ties, food, music, Christmas cheer and good will.
Santa flew in with his reindeer to make a special ap-
pearance at the depot, much to the delight of the chil-
dren. The Evart Jazz Band provided their own melodic
odes to the season in the sanctuary of the church.
There were plenty of games, pony rides for the kids,
an inflatable obstacle course, marshmallows over the
fire, face painting, freshly grilled hot dogs, hot choco-
late and even a bag of fresh popcorn from the hand of
smiling Jane inside the church.
There were also some wise men mingling and pass-
ing out small packets of myrrh while explaining the
meaning and value of the gift that was brought to
the Christ child in Bethehem all those years ago.
A turnout of about 1,200 was expected for the
three-hour event and it looked like those ex-
pectations were met easily.

Marion woman receives needed microwave

By Chris Lamphere
Weekly Voice

MARION — Up until about a

week ago, 85-year-old Harrietta
Johnson was perfectly content
using a 15-year-old microwave to
heat her tea and soups.
Johnson’s daughter, Penny,
said the microwave was on its
last leg: the inside ceiling part
was black, with charred pieces
routinely falling onto food as it
was being cooked; and chunks
of the floor and rotating disc had
begun to peel off.
“I’ve been thinking about get-
ting a new one, but never did,”
said Johnson, who recently wit-
nessed the last moments of her
microwave’s life. “It was rattling
inside and all of a sudden, noth-
ing.”
While some people simply
wouldn’t be able to manage with-
out a microwave to heat meals,
Johnson said it likely would have
been several months before she
could save up enough money to
buy a new one.
“It probably would have been
a while,” Johnson said. Penny
said her mother lives on a fixed
income and not having the mi-
crowave would have been a real
hardship.
“I am writing to you for a
microwave for my mom,” reads
Penny’s submission in the Cadil-
lac News Believe ... Christmas
Wishes Do Come True campaign. Chris Lamphere | Weekly Voice
