Day Eight Questions NEBOSH
Day Eight Questions NEBOSH
Interlocked Guards
Guard open:
Power to the machine is disabled when the guard is open and it will not
operate until the guard is in place
Guard closed:
The guard is locked shut until the machine has returned to a safe
condition
The act of opening the guard stops the dangerous parts of the
machinery and disables power
Adjustable/Self-Adjusting Guards
Used when it is not possible to prevent access to dangerous parts
Adjustable guard
o Set manually to a range of positions by the operator
Self-adjusting guard
o Usually spring-loaded to adjust itself to the workpiece
o Requires no adjustment by the operator
Trip Devices
Limitations include
- over-riding by e.g. placing a platform over the pressure mat,
- May not operated fast enough
- Trips may lead to production delays
3. Give the answer of below questions ;
a) Identify four mechanical hazards associated with the use of a pedestal
drill. (4)
c) Outline the safety precautions a worker should take while using a wood
chisel. (8)
The tool may shatter during use, throwing off sharp metal fragments (chisel
blade).
The handle may come loose during use (e.g. axe head comes off
handle).
The tool may be blunt leading to use of excessive force which causes
loss of control (e.g. blunt knife).
Simple human error, where the user misjudges a movement (e.g. hits
own thumb with hammer).
The tool may be misused, i.e. used in an inappropriate way or for an
inappropriate task (e.g. a screwdriver used as a crowbar).
4. A portable electric sander is being used in a factory;
a) Identify hazards that may be present. (4)
b) Outline control measures that could be taken to reduce risk. (4)
Electricity.
Noise.
Vibration.
Hazardous substances.
Ionising radiation.
Non-ionising radiation.
Extreme temperatures.
Ergonomics.
Slips, trips and falls.
Fire and explosion.
Protection
Fixed guards over drive mechanism.
Safety switch under seat to ensure that driver is in seat before machine
will operate.
Use restricted to trained operators only.
Hearing protection.
Refueling carried out in well-ventilated area.
Job rotation may be necessary to limit vibration exposure.
Use restricted for workers with sensitization.
8. Outline following;
a) Defective conditions of non-powered hand tools that could present risks
to the user. (2)
b) The requirements for the safe use of non-powered hand tools. (2)
Tools must be suitable for the task that they are going to perform and for the
environment in which they are to be used, e.g. non-sparking tools (do not
produce sparks when struck) are suitable for use in a potentially flammable
atmosphere.
10. Identify four mechanical & four non mechanical hazards presented by
hand held electric grinder and outline in each case how injury may occur. (8)
Secure grinder in position.
12. Outline the hazards associated with the use of a circular saw and outline
general control measures against each hazard. (8)
Hazards
Protection
13. Identify pre-use checks for electrical safety that should be carried out on
following;
14. Outline a range of checks that should be made for electrical safety in a
workplace. (8)
b) Four factors that could increase the severity of injury resulting from
contact with electricity. (4)
c) Four factors that could reduce the severity of injury resulting from contact
with electricity. (4)
18. Identify possible effects on the human body from a severe electric shock.
(4)
19. Identify a range of checks that should be made to ensure electrical safety
in an office environment. (4)
21. List the factors when determining the frequency of the inspection and
testing of electrical equipment at construction sites. (4)
22. List the items that should be included in a visual electrical safety
inspection checklist. (4)
