LAB 2

SIMPLE RADIOMETRIC CORRECTION

Objective:

In this exercise we will perform simple radiometric corrections using ERDAS Imagine
software.

i) Replace missing/bad line


ii) Haze reduction

Data:

Subsets of a Landsat 5 TM data :


i) missing_line.img file
ii) haze.img file

Exercise 1 : Replace missing/bad line

1.From the ERDAS IMAGINE main select Viewer and display a missing_line.img file.
2. Right click mouse button and select Fit image to window.

3. Use the Zoom In icon , zoom in the image and locate the missing line on the
image.

4. Once you see the bad line, use the inquire cursor to determine line number of
the bad line.
5. Move the cursor to the respective bad line and note down the line number from
the inquire window (Hint: the Y reading...). Make sure File is selected on the top left
box.

6. From the main menu select interpreter and Utilities, Relace Bad
lines…
Replace Bad lines window will come out and fill in the Input Image (i.e.
missing_line.img), the new output file name (e.g corrected line.img) and also the
effected line that you have noted down earlier.

7. Click OK.
8. Click Viewer and display your corrected image and observe the new output image.

Exercise 2: Haze Reduction

1.From the ERDAS IMAGINE main select Viewer and display a haze.img file.

Do you notice any hazy area?

2. Now display the image in multi layer arrangement in and display the image in grey
scale. From Viewer window : File, Open, Multi Layer Arrangement…
The following multi band display windows will be displayed.

The first Viewer shows the image in Composite Colour display and the rest are
individual band being displayed in grey scale.
Please note the present of haze from Band 1 to band 4. Is the amount of haze
increasing or decreasing? Why.

3. Now, we are going to minimize the effect of haze from the image.

4. From ERDAS IMAGINE main menu select Interpreter , select Radiometric


Enhancement, select Haze Reduction.

The following window will come out.

5. Fill in the Input File (i.e haze.img) and give a new output file name (e.g
dehaze.img), and the Method select Landsat 5 TM (Because you are using data
from Landsat 5 TM).

6, Click OK.

7. After the processing is completed, display the haze.img image and the new
dehaze.img image side by side by opening two viewers and compare the amount
of hazy areas between the two images.
