CONCLUSION (COMBUSTION)

In conclusion, alkanes and alkenes can be differentiated based on the combustion test in
which alkanes are easier to combust than alkenes.

CONCLUSION (SOLUBILITY)

According to their solubility, these hydrocarbons are insoluble, immiscible to water as they
are non-polar substances as opposed to making new bonds in reacting water with
cyclohexane.

CONCLUSION (REACTION ANALYSIS)

In this experiment, Alkanes are unreactive to bromine unless under special condition or
catalyst like being exposed to UV light and Alkanes also unreactive to potassium
permanganate. Alkenes are readily reactive to bromine since its double bond can be broken
easily through addition reaction also is relatively similar if Alkenes are added with potassium
permanganate.

CONCLUSION (ALL)

In this experiment, an unknown hydrocarbon family are identified through combustion,

solubility, and reaction analysis. Hence, this experiment is a success. It can be seen from the
experiments that alkenes are more reactive than alkanes. Alkenes shows a lot of reactions
including, addition reaction and oxidation. This is due to its carbon-carbon double bond since
it is an unsaturated hydrocarbon. Instead, alkane only undergo halogenation which is a
substitution reaction when react with bromine water. Therefore, alkenes are more reactive
hydrocarbon than alkanes.
