Course Objective
To enable student to design and carry out the independent research with appropriate aims and
relevant set of objectives, as well as methodologies employed with respect to Hospitality and
Tourism Management and development.
1. Introduction to Research
Definition, need, aims, importance, scope, classifications, types: qualitative, quantitative; casual,
descriptive, exploratory, characteristics, and research process.
2. Research Design
Meaning, need, types, factors affecting research planning and design, basic purpose and
principles of research design
Introduction, preparing data for analysis, exploring and presenting data- classification,
tabulation, array, range, frequency distribution, Presentation of data-graphic, histogram, Polygon,
O-give, describing data using statistics- Mean, Mode, Median, Dispersion/ Skewness, Examining
relationship, differences and trend- Correlation, regression, Estimation and hypothesis testing
using z test, t test and chi square test. Computer simulation using SPSS/Excel/STATA
Overview, strategies for qualitative analysis and procedure- deductive method, inductive method,
Delphi techniques, quantifying qualitative data

Introduction of proposal, importance of proposal, significance of proposal in research, things to
be included while writing proposal
Organization of the Report: Title Page, Signatory Page, Acknowledgement, Executive Summary,
Table of Contents, Introduction, Hypothesis/ Research Issues/Research Problem Statement,
Literature review and conceptual framework. Research Methodology, Research Delimitation,
Findings, Recommendations and Conclusions References and Appendixes; Oral Presentation of
the Report: Addressing Anticipation with Charts and Graphs, Relevant Data, Use of Audio
Visuals, Flow of Information, Standard of Language, Time Management, Sitting Arrangement,
Reading Materials. Reading out the Reports etc;
